I was supposed to wait until October 24th to tell you this story on stage. I can't wait. It's too heavy. So for the next 30 days, I will write you a novel here, one wound at a time. It's called THE MAN IN THE ROOM.
It's about the boy who learned to fall quietly. It's about you. It's about me. On Oct 24, we close the book and open the room. No acting, just truth. Today we start with the boy.

Behind the strong face is a man fighting battles nobody can see.

The Man in the Room is a raw and intimate theatrical journey into men’s mental health — exploring loneliness, identity, grief, pressure, emotional pain, masculinity, and the struggle to ask for help.

How do you survive when everyone expects you to be strong?

How do you speak when you were taught to remain silent?

How do you find yourself when the man you became is slowly disappearing?

This is not just a story about a man in a room.

It is the room inside every man who has ever suffered in silence.

A story of pain.
A story of identity.
A story of survival.
A story that reminds us: men need space to feel, speak, break, heal, and begin again.

NKATEKO MASHININI

Nkateko Mashinini, known artistically as Soft Thunder is a multifaceted South African artist and storyteller. Hailing from Ivory Park, Tembisa, she weaves powerful narratives through theatre, spoken word, and performance art, exploring themes of identity, resilience, and social justice.

Notable Works:
Umehluko Foundation: Part of the impactful projects "Road to Exam" and "The Picture," showcasing her talent in spoken word and performance art.
Kemet of Art: Featured in "Stifled," a project highlighting voices and stories often unheard.
