WHY DO PEOPLE TAKE DRUGS? (THE TRUTH REVEALED)

When you look at the Foundation for a Drug-Free World booklets, the core reason people turn to substances is simple:

"They want to change something about their lives".

They view drugs as a temporary fix for temporary problems. But a temporary escape always leads to long-term consequences.

Here are the top reasons youth start using drugs, straight from the booklets:

To fit in:
The intense pressure to belong to a peer group.

To escape or relax:
Trying to tune out the stress of daily life.

To relieve boredom:
Lacking constructive or engaging activities.

To seem grown-up:
Mistaking substance use for maturity or independence.

To rebel:
Pushing back against authority or societal rules.

To experiment:
Simple curiosity about how a substance feels.

The Big Deception:
Youth often think drugs are a solution. But eventually, the drugs become the problem. Difficult as it may be to face your problems, the consequences of drug use are always worse than the problem you are trying to solve.

The real solution is education, healthy mentorship, and empowering youth with hard facts before they experiment with their futures.

Which of these factors do you notice most among youth in your community? Let us know in the comments below.

JUST A BROKEN TOY

The teacher said I was too noisy.
They told my parents I needed a doctor.
The doctor told me I was broken.
He said Ritalin would make me better.

This is how the nightmare started.

On day one, Ritalin made me numb.
No feelings, no emotions, no interest.
My dreams were filled with monsters.
I woke up sweating like a beast.

On day two, I could barely walk.
Mother told me to stay in bed.
Horrible nightmares haunted me
As troubling urges filled my thoughts.

On day three, I went to school.
My friend asked me what was wrong.
I lost control and lashed out
They had to pull me away.
I was scared of what I’d done.

Why am I so broken?
Mommy went to the principal’s office,
With tears and sorrow in her eyes.
Back to the doctor we went.
The dosage went up, and I felt hollow.

No more me, just a shadow.
I am just a broken toy.
I felt like I couldn’t be fixed.
The world felt heavy and dark.
I felt I couldn't take it anymore.

My thoughts were filled with sadness.
My eyes felt empty and hollow.
I lost a ton of weight,
But the doctor said I was better then.

That was my life.No more me, just a broken toy.
Darkness felt so close to me.

A WARNING TO PARENTS:

Ritalin was not the cure for me,
It almost cost me everything.
I am better now;
No more Ritalin for me.
Ritalin was not the right path.

I play sports now, and eat less sugar, but that is okay.
I get more sleep, and the nightmares are gone.
I eat healthier; food is no longer disgusting.

Take it from a broken toy:
Life is better naturally. No more Ritalin for me.

FROM A SINGLE BOOKLET TO REACHING MILLIONS

The DAPISOITA Story:
Every great movement starts with a single step. For the founder of DAPISOITA TANZANIA, that journey began in 2016 with a simple package of "Truth About Drugs" booklets received through the mail.

What started as a personal mission to distribute materials has evolved into a powerhouse of community transformation.

Milestones of Impact:
2016 - 2023: A season of learning. After completing 14 online courses and earning certificates with honors, the vision for a structured organization was born

August 23, 2023: DAPISOITA TANZANIA (Drugs Abuse Prevention Initiatives Support Organization) was officially established!

The "Street Vending Education" Innovation:
Moving beyond simple distribution, DAPISOITA launched a one-on-one engagement system in Morogoro. This wasn't just giving out booklets—it was about registering individuals, following up, and ensuring real accountability.

Massive Reach:
Through Abood TV, the message reached over 1.6 million people, while the street-level program registered over 3,000 active participants.

Current Success in Dar es Salaam:
Since February 2026, the work has expanded into Mbezi Luis Ward, Ubungo District. In just one month, the team has already reached over 2,000 people through their unique street-level approach!

A Legacy of Trust:
The greatest achievement isn't just the numbers—it's the trust. DAPISOITA is now recognized by government institutions and trusted by the communities they serve.

This work has empowered our leader to write his own books and build professional capacity that changes lives every single day.

"My success is not only about the number of people I have reached, but also about the real change I have started to see in the community and within myself as a leader."

We are honored to stand alongside DAPISOITA as they continue to lead Tanzania toward a drug-free future.
