The African Doctoral Academy (ADA) serves to coordinate and strengthen excellence in doctoral education at Stellenbosch University (SU) and across the African continent. The ADAโ€™s bi-annual, two week long Doctoral Schools take place every year in Summer (January) and Winter (June-July) and aim to offer high impact research and methodology training, as well as options in academic preparedness and career development. The Schools are open to doctoral candidates, their supervisors and researchers in general.

From 24 to 28 August 2026, the African Doctoral Academy at Stellenbosch University, in collaboration with the Centre for Innovation in Learning and Teaching at the Central University of Technology, presented a short course on ๐€๐œ๐š๐๐ž๐ฆ๐ข๐œ ๐‹๐ž๐š๐๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ๐ก๐ข๐ฉ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐†๐จ๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ๐ง๐š๐ง๐œ๐ž ๐ข๐ง ๐‡๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ž๐ซ ๐„๐๐ฎ๐œ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง: ๐ƒ๐ข๐š๐ฅ๐จ๐ ๐ฎ๐ž๐ฌ ๐จ๐ง ๐‘๐ž๐Ÿ๐ฅ๐ž๐œ๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐ž ๐‹๐ž๐š๐๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ๐ก๐ข๐ฉ in Bloemfontein.

The five-day short course introduced key leadership theories and practices while drawing on participantsโ€™ professional experience and the collective expertise of the group.

Across eight dialogues, participants explored leadership at the individual, interpersonal and institutional levels. Dialogues ranged from self-awareness and emotional intelligence to team development, academic governance and leadership within an academic department.

The course encouraged participants to reflect critically on their leadership approaches and identify practical opportunities for continued development. This work culminated in the preparation of a Personal Leadership Development Plan.

We thank Mr Schalk van der Merwe for facilitating the course. We also thank our colleagues at the Central University of Technology for their valued collaboration and support.

Over the past three weeks, from 29 June to 17 July 2026, the African Doctoral Academy (ADA) Winter School brought together doctoral candidates, researchers and academics from across Africa and beyond for an intensive programme of learning, engagement and scholarly development.

Delivered in both online and in-person formats, delegates participated in courses covering quantitative and qualitative research methods, higher education teaching and learning, academic writing and publishing, entrepreneurship, mixed methods research, and the evolving role of AI in academia.

This yearโ€™s programme also included valuable collaborations with PERIPERI U at Stellenbosch University and the Cape Higher Education Consortium (CHEC), further strengthening our shared commitment to research capacity development across the continent.
