Centre for Sustainability Transitions
The Stellenbosch Centre for Complex Systems in Transition (CST) is a new Stellenbosch University ‘flagship’ initiative that was established in 2015.
CST is a research and training hub that draws together researchers and practitioners interested in complexity thinking, sustainability, and transdisciplinarity. This initiative brings together three core themes:
Complexity thinking,
Sustainability science and
Transdisciplinary research methodology. Within these three core themes the CST will focus on the following five thematic areas:

The Western Cape Province’s disaster management crews have been in high gear since torrential rain and flooding impacted thousands of people over the past two weeks. Among them is an award-winning provincial employee and CST student, Jody Wentzel. This programme, offered by the Centre for Sustainability Transitions (CST) at Stellenbosch University, provides participants with critical knowledge, skills, and values to understand and analyse global and local sustainability challenges.
The PGDip is an honours-level qualification comprising of 8 modules, designed to be ideally completed within one year. It offers transdisciplinary training in the fields of social-ecological systems and sustainability transitions and transformations. The degree is oriented towards diverse audiences, from recent graduates across multiple disciplines, to working professionals seeking to deepen their sustainability skills and understanding.
