On Saturday, 15 August, over 100 students gathered at the Krotoa Building for a night of cinema, culture, and connection at the AMANI Film Festival.
Hosted by AMANI โ a student board representing our international student body from across the African continent โ in collaboration with the Student Representative Council's Internationalisation Portfolio, the screening brought together AMANI members, international semester students, and local SU peers. Attendees enjoyed popcorn, shared laughter and cross-cultural storytelling while watching Queen of Katwe, the inspiring film adaptation of Ugandan chess prodigy Phiona Mutesi.

When an international student arrives at Stellenbosch University (SU), the public view is seamless. We see the celebratory arrivals, the cultural exchanges across campus, and the global partnerships taking root. However, behind every single international student who steps into a classroom or registers for a degree is a complex, high-stakes framework of national legislation, regulatory compliance, and bureaucratic navigation. Without the right visa, the journey stops before it even begins.
At SU International, this important work is led by Carlyn Hewitson, Coordinator for Immigration Support. Working where legal requirements meet the human realities of moving to a new country, Carlyn helps ensure that international students and staff have the guidance and support they need to navigate the immigration process and settle in South Africa legally and confidently.
โMy role is at the junction of these internationalisation activities and Immigration,โ Carlyn explains. โTherefore, supporting students to navigate the complexities of the visa process in terms of the Immigration Act is key to supporting these core internationalisation activities.โ

Itโs , and today weโre highlighting another story! ๐โ๏ธ
Weโre spotlighting Alulutho Njongi, an SU student currently pursuing his Diploma in Sustainable Development. In June 2026, Alulutho travelled to Tรผbingen University in Germany to participate in an International Summer School ๐ฉ๐ช
"I attended the Tรผbingen International Studies & European Studies (T-IES) programme in Tรผbingen, Germany for 4 weeks. This was a very meaningful experience where I got to strengthen my knowledge of sustainability and culture.
I had the amazing opportunity of going to the European Union Parliament and learn about how decisions are made and the history of the union. This experience was meaningful in more ways than one because I got to learn more about sustainability and got to meet some of the best people ever"

When Dr Heide Hackmann considers the vast landscape of global science, she does not see abstract data or geographical borders. She sees human connection. Serving as the Chair in Science Futures at Stellenbosch Universityโs (SU) Centre for Research on Evaluation, Science and Technology (CREST), Heide has spent a distinguished career navigating the intersections of science, global policy, and international diplomacy.
Having served as the founding CEO of the International Science Council in Paris and co-chaired United Nations expert panels on global sustainability, her track record spans decades of leading science systems at the highest level. Yet, beneath the strategic frameworks and international diplomacy lies a beautifully grounded personal conviction.
โRelationships matter; they are both the foundation and the catalyst for lasting change,โ Heide reflects.
This belief forms the heartbeat of her contribution to internationalisation at SU and beyond. In an era shaped by complex global challenges, and shifting geopolitical dynamics, Heideโs life work demonstrates that global mobility, policy development, and international research are fundamentally human endeavours.
