Weโ€™re spotlighting Zainab Kashim-Bello, an SU PhD Candidate in the field of Molecular Biology. In March 2026, Zainab travelled to Venice International University in Italy for a Spring School.

"I attended the Equipping Researchers with Skills, Strategies and Confidence for Science Communication course at the Venice International University (VIU) Spring School on San Servolo Island, Italy, in March 2026. As a PhD researcher, I found the course extremely valuable, as it provided practical tools and strategies for communicating scientific research clearly and effectively to both academic and public audiences. I particularly appreciated the interactive activities, which enhanced my confidence in presenting my work, engaging with diverse audiences, and demonstrating the broader impact of my research.

Beyond the academic learning, the cultural experiences in Venice were equally memorable, including visits to historic museums, exploration of the iconic canals, and the renowned Murano glass workshops. These experiences enriched the programme and complemented the learning journey. I would highly recommend this course to researchers seeking to strengthen their science communication skills and broaden their professional development."

Academic staff and Professional Academic Support Staff (PASS) at Stellenbosch University (SU) are invited to apply for an Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility (ICM) grant available for mobility visits to Uppsala University in Sweden. The fully funded grant supports short-term professional development, bilateral knowledge exchange, and institutional collaboration.

Funding & Duration Details:
Grant Package: Covers daily subsistence allowance plus an Erasmus+ travel grant.

Duration: 7 days duration + 2 travel days (mobility must be completed by 30 June 2027).

3 mobility grants are available in total.

Applications are currently open to SU students for the International Winter University (IWU) 2027, hosted by Philipps-Universitรคt Marburg in Germany.

Running for two weeks in January 2027, this intensive short-term programme combines an English-taught academic module focusing on "Scientific Challenges in the Global Village" (biology and molecular biology) with an intensive German language course tailored to all proficiency levels (A1 to B2).

Today, 15 September 2026, the UNESCO Chair on Intercultural Competences (ICC) at Stellenbosch University (SU) is hosting its annual Spring Symposium.

Setting the theme for the Symposium, Dr. Darla K. Deardorff (UNESCO Chairholder ICC), highlights the mission behind the gathering:

"Societies worldwide grapple with polarisation and xenophobia. Universities have a key role in cultivating intercultural competence, promoting meaningful dialogue and creating inclusive communities. The Spring Symposium provides a platform to explore innovative approaches to intercultural dialogue while strengthening networks committed to inclusion and belonging."

Todayโ€™s programme puts this mission into action across three core sessions:

๐Ÿ”น UNESCO Story Circles Training: Mastering practical tools for intercultural empathy and active listening.

๐Ÿ”น Intercultural Dialogue on Xenophobia: Keynote perspectives and panel discussions focused on driving social cohesion.

๐Ÿ”น Poster Showcase & Networking: Highlighting local research and grassroots initiatives shaping inclusive communities.
