With an estimated 7 000 to 10 000 bodies waiting to be identified each year, the lack of a comprehensive database and limited forensic resources pose significant challenges. Smith, the only expert in forensic facial imaging in Africa, has established the VIZ.Lab research group here at Stellenbosch University to explore forensic identification methods and bridge the gap between science and art. She advocates for standardised post-mortem photography, training for forensic officers, and the use of artificial intelligence and digitisation to enhance the identification process.
