We are proud to announce that Africa Centre director Prof Munya Saruchera will take part in the School of Public Leadershipโ€™s second symposium on gender inequality and anti-corruption. The first one took place in June 2024.

The symposium will bring together scholars, policymakers, civil society actors, development partners and private sector actors from across Africa and beyond to examine how corruption and governance failures intersect with gender inequality and gender-based violence and to identify strategies for accountable, gender-responsive institutions.

The event will be structured around four themes:

โ€ข Gendered impacts of corruption; barriers to womenโ€™s participation in governance; institutional norms and power relations
โ€ข Accountability gaps in GBV responses; institutional responsibilities and accountability; GBV and sustainability of interventions
โ€ข Accountability mechanisms relevant to GBV and gender equality; gender-responsive anti-corruption frameworks and indicators; reform pathways
โ€ข Roles of civil society, academia and the private sector; policy coherence; partnership-building for reform

The objective is to generate insights that can inform policy and to foster cross-sector collaboration to strengthen accountability, institutional reform and gender-inclusive and gender-responsive governance, leadership and practice.

It will be a hybrid symposium, with the venue located in Bellville in the northern areas of the City of Cape Town. Follow this link to register for in-person or online attendance: https://form.jotform.com/261823034354048

Our team based at the Lynedoch Community School said: โ€œWe partnered with the Stellenbosch GBV Centre who facilitated an impactful group session with our older learners, focusing on GBV awareness, body safety and the dangers associated with social media. The session was well received, with teachers expressing their appreciation for both the content and the presenters. Learners were actively engaged and gained valuable knowledge from the experience. Collaboration with external organisations such as the Stellenbosch GBV Centre broadens awareness and introduces learners to a wide range of relevant topics that support their overall development and well-being.โ€

Our team based at Bonnievale High said: "An important initiative last month was collaboration with the SAPS and GBV structures to arrange a session at the school. A guest speaker was invited to share their personal testimony about substance dependence, which had a strong impact on the learners. The school consistently benefits when external speakers present real-life experiences, as learners tend to engage more deeply with these messages. In addition to the testimony, learners were made aware of various substances and the risks associated with their use.โ€

Our anti-bullying and GBV awareness and intervention programs are funded by the GBVF Response Fund1

In this episode of the Legal Resources Radio's series on s*xual corruption, Claire Rankin and Muyenga Mugerwa-Sekawabe sit down with Professor Sope Williams, a professor at Stellenbosch University and Deputy Director of the African Procurement Law Unit. Prof Williams is a leading anti-corruption expert and has produced extensive research focused on s*xual corruption. Claire, Muyenga and Prof Williams delve deep into the legal landscape surrounding s*xual corruption; and explore the gaps in the current legislative framework - which see perpetrators go unpunished and place victims themselves at significant risk of criminalisation.

๐Ÿฟ๏ธ THE BILL OF RIGHTS AT 30: INTERSECTIONAL JUSTICE

Are the promises of our Bill of Rights reaching the women who keep South Africaโ€™s wheels turning, or is the legal system still failing those it claims to protect?

If you want to know how the Women's Legal Centre is dismantling the colonial and patriarchal legacies that still police womenโ€™s bodies and livelihoods, this episode is a must-listen.

The latest episode of our Human Rights Month series is officially OUT NOW.

Brendt Wayne DeWet sits down with Charlene May, Director of the Womenโ€™s Legal Centre, to discuss the intersection of race, class, and gender in our justice system.

In this episode, we discuss:

๐Ÿฟ๏ธ The value of unpaid care: Why the childcare and subsistence farming that keep our society running remain invisible on bank statements.

๐Ÿฟ๏ธ The "messy" reality of cohabitation: Why legal recognition for partners living together without a marriage certificate is a vital human rights "must-have."

๐Ÿฟ๏ธ Landmark victories: Reflecting on the historic Constitutional Court win for Muslim marriages and the ongoing fight for rights recognition.

๐Ÿฟ๏ธ Healing the scars of slavery: How the Mahlangu judgment for domestic workersโ€™ rights addresses centuries of systemic exclusion.

๐Ÿฟ๏ธ Decriminalising s*x work: A discussion on why the state must stop policing the bodies of consenting adults and respect bodily autonomy.
