Africa Open - Institute for Music, Research and Innovation

Africa Open - Institute for Music, Research and Innovation Independent music research institute in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Stellenbosch University.

Africa Open is an interdisciplinary institute for music research and innovation in Africa, located at the University of Stellenbosch. At the core of Africa Open is an understanding that knowledge generation in (South) Africa should not be bound by epistemologies, hierarchies and theoretical models that have created the Western-dominated modernity of the past 500 years. Africa Open is therefore committed to an artistic and scholarly agenda that challenges these ideas, and provides an unhindered space for the advancement of creative, innovative and experimental thought and performance.
