What a breath-taking capture of an endangered African wild dog by at Koru Camp! As Africa's second most endangered carnivore after the Ethiopian wolf, this colorful canine - also known as a Painted wolf - is a rare sighting indeed.

Threatened by habitat loss, human encroachment and disease from domestic dogs, it is vital that we protect the remaining homelands of African wild dogs. According to the IUCN Red List of endangered species, in 2020 there were just 1,409 mature individuals left in the wild - and this number was decreasing.

Through education and conservation, we want to reverse these shocking statistics and protect our wildlife for future generations 🙏

Want to know the unbelievable story behind this photo? This is what Blair had to say:

"Once the engine was switched off we could hear this pack of African Painted Wolves behind some thickets fighting over the scraps of a meal. All in all there were 4 hyena, 13 wild dogs and a very scared leopard in the tree above them who had just lost its breakfast!"

An exciting leopard sighting during the Nourish Green Kidz program, and this was on their very first game drive! 🐾😍

We do morning and evening game drives daily during programs held here at Koru Camp.
Joel does an amazing job of seamlessly blending in lessons on the environment and wildlife throughout the drives, keeping the information relevant and interactive to what is being seen as well as experienced makes it fun and easier to remember!

“With millions of dogs winding up in shelters across the country each year, choosing to adopt rather than shop has never been more important”

“It's no secret that dogs are a man's best friend. Nobody loves us as unconditionally”

Be the change THEY want to see in the world!

We are so grateful for all the support and encouragement we have received from you all! There are a lot of new friends following us here, so we thought it was time to re-introduce Koru to you all.

Koru Camp was born from the dire need for true wilderness access for the local underprivileged communities. 27 years on from Apartheid and there is still a stark and sad imbalance in the access of true African wilderness for black South African's, even those living in wilderness communities surrounded by private game reserves.

Without meaningful access to the bush, how can we develop a connection to, and love for, the Wilderness? And how can we develop a reverence and work to protect our wilderness if we do not know it?

We are in the process of building a community education eco tented camp within a private game reserve in the Greater Kruger. This camp is non-profit and its sole purpose is to host our local communities through various organisations and their existing programs as well as our own.

Koru Camp is a true wilderness camp in the middle of the bush, and is as an educational and inspirational space for local communities to experience the African bush. At Koru Camp they will be immersed in nature where they will learn about Africa's flora and fauna and understand that it is an essential part of their history and future.

Thank you for being here with us 💚.

The lilac-breasted roller (Coracias caudatus) is an African bird of the roller family, Coraciidae.

It is widely distributed in sub-Saharan Africa, and is a vagrant to the southern Arabian Peninsula.

It prefers open woodland and savanna, and it is for the most part absent from treeless places.

Usually found alone or in pairs, it perches conspicuously at the tops of trees, poles or other high vantage points from where it can spot insects, lizards, scorpions, snails, small birds and rodents moving about on the ground.[2]

Nesting takes place in a natural hole in a tree where a clutch of 2–4 eggs are laid, and incubated by both parents, who are extremely aggressive in defence of their nest, taking on raptors and other birds.

During the breeding season the male will rise to a fair height (69 to 144 metres), descending in swoops and dives, while uttering harsh, discordant cries

The sexes are different in coloration, and juveniles lack the long tail streamers of adults. This species is unofficially considered the national bird of Kenya.

Alternative names for the lilac-breasted roller include the fork-tailed roller, lilac-throated roller (also used for a subspecies of purple roller) and Mosilikatze's roller.

“Nocturnal animals, leopards are active at night when they venture out in search for food.

They mostly spend their days resting, camouflaged in the trees or hiding in caves…. let the hunt begin….
