Yesterday, Iimbovane collected 20 indigenous trees from the Centre for Conservation Education generously donated by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE). These trees will be planted at our partner schools during the coming week as part of World Environment Day celebrations.
The initiative aims to do more than simply enhance school gardens. By planting indigenous trees, we hope to restore degraded habitats, support local biodiversity, and create greener, healthier learning environments. The trees will also contribute to climate resilience at participating schools by helping to prevent soil erosion, providing shade, and reducing the impacts of urban heat.
Through these tree-planting events, we hope to inspire environmental stewardship among learners and educators while demonstrating how collective local action can make a meaningful contribution to broader climate and conservation goals.

Today we celebrated International Women and Girls in Science Day with 20 inspiring Grade 11 learners from Luhlaza High School at Stellenbosch University 💚🔬
The day began at the Stellenbosch University Botanical Garden, where learners explored plant diversity, observed live pollination at the lily pond, and witnessed a special Welwitschia mirabilis hand-pollination demonstration. They also heard from Amanda about her journey in botany and her internship at the garden.
We then continued at the Natural Science Building, where learners reflected on their fieldwork and were inspired by Ms Ria Olivier, Principal Investigator of the Antarctic Legacy of South Africa, who shared what it takes to lead polar research.
From plants to ice filled islands, today was about curiosity, confidence, and showing young women that science is for them 🌱✨

The Iimbovane team had the pleasure of spending the day with Imagineers South Africa, a Cape Town-based Muslim home educator group that creatively engineers imagination to inspire learning.
On 29 October 2025, we met at Helderberg Nature Reserve for a day filled with immersive, hands-on fun! Learners explored how seeds move, took on an exciting Helderberg scavenger hunt, and ended the day by crafting their own eco-friendly bird feeders using recyclable materials. 🪶♻️
Learners discovered how learning outdoors connects creativity, science, and conservation! 🌱💡

The Iimbovane Outreach Project team visited Gansbaai Academia on Thursday, 23 October 2025, for an exciting first-time collaboration with the school’s Grade 10 Biology class.
Learners explored ant ecology and morphology, and discovered how to use a scientific dichotomous key to identify different ant species. The hands-on microscope lesson gave everyone a closer look at the fascinating diversity of these tiny insects 🔬🐜!
🌿 Curiosity, science, and discovery — all in a day’s learning with Iimbovane!

As part of her winning prize in the Big Biodiversity Challenge 2025, Grade 7 learner Wendy Qumbelo from Umyezo Primary School spent an exciting day at Helderberg Nature Reserve with the Iimbovane team!
Eighteen learners joined us on 22 October 2025 to explore how nature inspires sustainable solutions. From an eco-building tour to hands-on activities like studying mini climate plots and investigating leaf adaptations 💚
Learners ended the day by designing their own nature-inspired inventions, reflecting on how we can learn from the natural world to build a sustainable future. 🌍✨

Iimbovane Nature Camp – Luhlaza Secondary School 🌿
Over the weekend (24–26 Oct 2025), 18 learners and 2 teachers from Luhlaza Secondary School joined us for an unforgettable Nature Camp at Gecko Campsite, Wortelgat (Stanford) — tucked away in a beautiful milkwood forest.
From fun icebreakers and an Invasive Species Game (won by the 🔥 Pink Group), to hands-on alien clearing and a Fynbos hike, the weekend was packed with learning and teamwork. Learners explored dune vegetation at Grotto Beach, practiced scientific illustration, and wrapped up with group presentations and awards.
🏆 Pink Group – Most Competitive
🌳 Endinako – Most Rooikrans Cleared
🎉 Dini – Best Vibes Award
What a weekend of science, nature, and great energy! 💚

As the October school holidays draw to a close, the Iimbovane team takes a moment to reflect on our Biodiversity Camp held from 6–8 October at Potberg Eco Venue, De Hoop Nature Reserve.
Over three inspiring days, 26 learners from Swartberg Secondary and Swellendam Secondary School explored the wonders of nature through hikes, nature journaling, and dune vegetation studies — and even discovered the fascinating world of nocturnal insects after dark! 🦋✨
A big thank you to the Maties Ultimate Frisbee Society for joining us and adding some frisbee fun to the mix! 🥏🌞
We’re so grateful to everyone who made this camp an unforgettable experience filled with learning, laughter, and adventure. 💚🌱

🌍💚 World Environmental Health Day 2025 💚🌍
Today we celebrated with the Cape Winelands Biosphere team at Bottelary Primary School.
To mark this year’s theme — “Clean Air, Healthy People” — Iimbovane facilitated a fun scavenger hunt with the Grade 5 learners. The challenge? Find and identify 10 invasive species around the school dam! 🌿🔍
Not only did the learners enjoy the adventure, but they also discovered how invasive species can impact our environment and health. Small actions, like learning about and managing invasives, play a big role in creating a healthier environment for people and nature alike. 🌱✨

Happy World Nature Conservation Day! ✨🌿
Today we celebrate the incredible biodiversity that keeps our ecosystems alive — including the hidden helpers under our feet! 🐜💚
In South Africa’s unique fynbos, ants play a vital role by carrying seeds underground, protecting them from fire and predators, and helping new plants grow. 🔥🌱
Small creatures. Big impact. Let’s remember to protect all of nature’s unsung heroes! 🌼🌍
