Learners from Academy Private School joined us for a hands-on day of exploring the Eerste River!

From investigating freshwater ecosystems and aquatic invertebrates in the field to examining specimens under microscopes and analysing water-quality data, learners discovered how science can help us understand the health of our rivers. 🔬🐛💦

The day was filled with exploration, learning, and getting our hands wet! 🌱

On 29 August 2026, learners from the Methodix Foundation’s Emerging Youth Leaders Programme joined Iimbovane for an exciting day exploring how technology helps scientists understand biodiversity and climate change.

From camera traps to artificial intelligence, mobile apps and acoustic monitoring, learners discovered how scientists use technology to study species and ecosystems.

The learning continued in the field, where learners used GPS technology to record study plant locations and worked with a LI-COR gas exchange analyser to investigate photosynthesis and respiration. They also measured leaf temperature and stomatal conductance to explore how environmental conditions influence plants. 🌱📍🔬

By collecting and comparing real scientific data, learners experienced how technology + fieldwork + science can help us understand how plants respond to their environment and changing climate conditions. 🌍🌱

On Wednesday, 8 July, Iimbovane took part in the Annual Girls in Conservation Entomology Day with the Cape Leopard Trust! 🌿🦋

We worked with Grade 9 learners from schools across the Western Cape for a day of discovering the fascinating world of insects, conservation, and the exciting careers that protect our biodiversity.

Here's to inspiring the next generation of women in science! 💚🔬

🌿📍 Conservation in action along the Eerste River!

On Saturday, 6 June, Iimbovane hosted 13 Conservation Leaders from Nature Connect for an exciting day of environmental exploration and citizen science in Stellenbosch.

Learners from Grades 10 and 11 spent the day mapping invasive species along the Eerste River, collecting GPS data while enjoying the beautiful Art Mile. Through hands-on fieldwork, they contributed valuable information that can support future conservation efforts in the area.

The learning didn't stop in the field! Participants also developed their digital skills by importing GPS coordinates into Microsoft Excel, creating distribution maps using Google My Maps, and exploring the landscape through Google Earth.

A day of science, technology, conservation, and discovery—empowering the next generation of environmental leaders! 🌱💚

Yesterday, Iimbovane collected 20 indigenous trees from the Centre for Conservation Education generously donated by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE). These trees will be planted at our partner schools during the coming week as part of World Environment Day celebrations.

The initiative aims to do more than simply enhance school gardens. By planting indigenous trees, we hope to restore degraded habitats, support local biodiversity, and create greener, healthier learning environments. The trees will also contribute to climate resilience at participating schools by helping to prevent soil erosion, providing shade, and reducing the impacts of urban heat.

Through these tree-planting events, we hope to inspire environmental stewardship among learners and educators while demonstrating how collective local action can make a meaningful contribution to broader climate and conservation goals.
