Heritage Month, so it's worth thinking about what got handed to you that you never chose.

Some of it is good. A work ethic. Knowing how to make something with your hands. A language. The instinct to feed anyone who arrives.

Some of it isn't. A fear of asking to be paid properly. A belief that wanting more is showing off. The idea that struggling quietly is a virtue.

You get to keep some and put some down. Both are allowed, and picking through it is the work of about a decade.

Somewhere behind you is a person who walked a distance you'd drive, worked a job you'd refuse, and did it for years without any expectation that they'd see the result.

You are the result. The ordinary Sunday you're having is the thing they were working towards, and they'd have been perfectly happy with it.

That's not a debt you have to repay by achieving something enormous. It's just worth knowing whose shoulders the ordinary day is standing on.

Heritage Month, and this is a stranger line than it first looks.

It's about land, literally. But the wider point survives the move: some things were put where they are by people who had reasons, and it's worth understanding the reason before you shift it.

Not everything old is worth keeping. But not everything old is in your way either, and telling the difference is most of wisdom.

Rest gets treated as the thing you do once the work allows it, which means for a lot of people it never quite arrives.

Worth reframing. The quality of every decision you make next week is set by how recovered you are when you make it. Tired people take bad jobs, quote badly and answer customers worse.

Resting isn't the reward at the end. It's an input, the same as anything else you put into the business.

Take tomorrow properly. It's not indulgence, it's maintenance.

An hour on a Saturday can cover most of the admin that eats your weekdays.

Write the week's posts and schedule them. Send the two invoices. Reply to the messages that need thought rather than speed. Put next week's jobs in one place you'll actually look.

It works because you're doing one type of thinking at a time. Switching between selling, invoicing and posting all day is what makes a week feel full without much moving.

Saturday morning.

Worth noticing who in your life asks how you are before they ask you for something. It's a shorter list than most people expect, and it rarely matches the list of people you spend the most time on.

That isn't a reason to cut anyone off. It's a reason to make sure the short list knows they're on it, because those are the ones who'll still be there in ten years.

A bad review feels like the end of something. It usually isn't.

What actually damages a business is a bad review with no reply under it, or a defensive one. People read the response more carefully than the complaint, and they're deciding what you'd be like to deal with if something went wrong for them.

Short, calm, no arguing the facts in public. Acknowledge, say what you'd like to do, offer to take it offline.

A page with one bad review handled well often reads better than a page with nothing but fives.

Most quotes are never followed up, and most of the ones that are get followed up once.

The person didn't say no. They got busy, the message moved up their screen, and it left their head entirely. That is the ordinary outcome, not a rejection.

One short message four days later recovers a surprising amount of work. "Hi, just checking you got this and whether you had any questions." No pressure, no discount, no apology for following up.

Then leave it. One follow-up is service. Four is pressure.

Nothing ever feels finished. There's always one more adjustment, one more thing you'd change if you had another week.

Which means finished is a decision somebody makes, not a state the work arrives at on its own.

The people who ship things aren't more satisfied with their work than you are. They've just accepted that the last ten percent of polish is usually invisible to everyone except the person who made it.

Everybody asks the business owner how business is going. Almost nobody asks how they're going.

It's a small distinction and it lands hard when you're the one holding it. You get asked about turnover and never about sleep. About whether you're busy and never about whether you're alright.

If you know someone running something on their own, that's the question tonight. Not about the business. About them.

And if that's you: it's allowed to be hard. It being hard doesn't mean you chose wrong.
