In a seasonal sense, Whitsun represents harmony, new inspiration, and the beauty of diverse voices coming together. In Waldorf settings, Whitsun is often marked with dove imagery, white clothing, and activities that emphasise unity and cooperation. This year we celebrated with lighting a candle, the sweet scent of oranges and cloves, songs, stories, crafting and togetherness.

This week the smell of pannekoeke (pancakes) and plaatkoekies (flapjacks) filled the air as Classes 9 and 10 brought deeg (batter) and kreativiteit (creativity) to their Afrikaans lessons. Recipes and instructions were given entirely in Afrikaans, and students practised politely asking for and naming ingredients and tools such as kaneelsuiker, heuning, gasplaat, pan, voorskoot and spaan. Sharing their baked goods with fellow students and teachers - also in Afrikaans - created another opportunity to converse, laugh together, and receive praise for their enthusiastic and very tasty efforts.

WHY DO WE MAKE OUR OWN MASKS?

At Stellenbosch Waldorf School, students make their own theatre masks to fit their own faces and the characters they are playing. As they shape the features and choose colours for the masks, they begin to understand their characters more deeply - not only through learning lines, but through expression, mood, and emotion. This hands-on process helps students grow in confidence and brings real depth and authenticity to their performances.

Misty winter days spent figure drawing - using fingers and powdered charcoal break the habits of outline and erasing. Brave and interesting work by Class 10 students.

In Class 4 and 5, reading is more than a skill, itโ€™s a doorway to imagination, empathy, and inner growth.

Through stories, our children meet heroes, explore worlds, and begin to find their own voice. In the Waldorf journey, reading nurtures not just the mind, but the heart and spirit too.
