โCollaboration within Africa is important for early career researchers,โ says Dr Akuch Anyieth, whose work is helping build knowledge and solutions grounded in the experiences of African communities.
Her research explores how families affected by inter-communal violence navigate the lasting effects of conflict, with a particular focus on how intergenerational trauma shapes relationships between those who experienced civil war and younger generations born during or after the conflict.
Dr Anyieth is one of four academics selected for Stellenbosch Universityโs inaugural Future Research Chairs Programme (SUNFutuRe) โ an initiative supporting exceptional postdoctoral researchers as they transition towards long-term academic leadership.
For her, strengthening collaboration across the continent is part of building an African research community capable of developing solutions to Africaโs challenges.

In January 2026, ๐๐๐๐๐ launched the ๐๐ฉ๐ก๐ข๐ฅ ๐ข๐ง ๐๐ข๐จ๐ฅ๐๐ง๐ญ ๐๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐ข๐๐ฌ at Stellenbosch University . The programme offers critical decolonial approaches to engage in the long-term effects of mass violence and its transmission across generations. Grounded in the humanities and social sciences, and crucially from a Global South perspective, the programme encourages students to think about the relationship between history, memory and repair in both theoretical and applied ways.
At present we are accepting applications from International and Local students for the 2027 intake. To learn more about this exciting program, please visit: https://avreq.sun.ac.za/programmes/mphil-in-violent-histories/mphil-about/
