As we celebrate 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚 𝐃𝐚𝐲 today, the Innovus Technology Transfer Office at Stellenbosch University shares the exciting innovation ecosystem that is part of in the Southern tip of Africa.

The TTO hosted the 𝐖𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐂𝐚𝐩𝐞 𝐓𝐓𝐎 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐮𝐦 last week at Die Stal, Coetzenburg, Stellenbosch University. The forum brought together technology transfer professionals, researchers and industry partners, to engage on innovation, collaboration, and commercialisation opportunities across the region.

The programme featured insightful discussions and presentations from institutions across the Western Cape including a case study and a presentation relating to re-use of human health databases

𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐩𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐝𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐣𝐨𝐛 𝐢𝐧 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐬?

Researchers at Stellenbosch University have trained a Deep Convolutional Neural Network (DCNN) on approximately 28 000 images of healthy and diseased vines.

The result? An AI model that detects Grapevine Leafroll Disease (GLD) from a simple smartphone photo with up to 96% accuracy (and over 99% for certain cultivars).
