Highlights of the Homecoming week Faculty of Theology, Stellenbosch University | Tree planting ceremony

At our recent Homecoming on Friday, 11 September, the Faculty of Theology, welcomed back her allumni, amongst others Dr Fanie du Toit (on the photo with his wife next to the dean), now the Executive Director of the Centre for Justice and Reconciliation and Dr Rudi Buys, now Deputy Mayor for Stellenbosch. With the dean, they shared memories and stories as they reflected on their times as students here at the faculty, but also how these different memories shaped their current and future roles. We were also honored to host the wife of our mayor, Mrs Mercia Fasser, who planted a tree for future generations to sit under.
We were reminded, like with the planting of trees, that memory like the trees, can grow alongside each other, shape each other and the one memory doesnt need to replace the older ones.

Save the date for the Homecoming Alumni gathering, which will be held at the Faculty of Theology on September 11, 2026. The first panel discussion will focus on the topic: “From Theology to the World: Where Are You Now? How Has Theology Helped You Get There?” The second panel discussion will explore the impact of Theology on church ministry and how ministers’ roles have evolved.

The Faculty of Theology warmly invites you to a very special alumni gathering on Friday 11 September 2026, as part of the 11th Stellenbosch University Homecoming Weekend.
Reconnect with fellow alumni and reflect on the lasting impact of theological education during a morning of conversation, celebration and fellowship.
The programme will feature a panel discussion on the theme "Theology to the World: Graduates Thriving Across Sectors", where theology alumni will share their career journeys, reflect on the role that theology has played in their lives, and discuss the evolving nature of church ministry across different professions, denominations and contexts.
The morning will also include a historical reflection on the Faculty's iconic Norfolk Pine (Champion) tree, celebrating its 200th anniversary, followed by a commemorative tree-planting ceremony linked to the Faculty's Growing Our Own Timber initiative.
