Meet Lloyd Phillips, a Stellenbosch University alumnus and Quantitative Analyst at Standard Bank South Africa.

After graduating with a BCom in Mathematical Sciences and a BCom Honours in Financial Risk Management cm laude, Lloyd now works in Standard Bank’s Capital and Impairments Modelling team. His journey, however, has not only been shaped by academic achievement, but also by leadership, involvement and the people who supported him along the way.

From captaining his residence hockey team to serving as Vice Head Mentor at Huis Marais, Lloyd learned that growth is not only about what you achieve, but also about the relationships you build and the courage to ask for help when you need it.

For our Youth Month campaign, Lloyd gives us a behind-the-scenes look at his career and takes us through a day in his life.

Strengthening the Global Matie Network across Africa

Over the past week, Stellenbosch University continued to strengthen its presence across Africa through alumni engagements, institutional partnerships, and industry collaboration in Zimbabwe, Zambia, Kenya, and Tanzania.

Among the highlights were alumni gatherings, meetings with university leaders and industry partners, and a visit to the University of Dar es Salaam, where Prof Vasti Roodt was hosted by fellow Matie alumnus Dr Philbert Komu, now a lecturer in Philosophy. These engagements reflect the growing impact of the Global Matie Network and the important role our alumni play in fostering connections, collaboration, and opportunity across the continent.

Today is World Hunger Day.

For many Maties students, hunger is not a distant statistic.

It shows up in missed meals, difficulty concentrating, and the quiet anxiety of not knowing where the next meal will come from.

That reality is exactly what exists to change. Through this initiative, managed by our social workers and Student Representative Council, students in need receive non-perishable food items and financial support, year-round.

brings together staff, alumni and the broader community to help ensure students have access to essential food support.

Because no student should have to choose between learning and eating.

🤝 You can help. Visit givingmaties.sun.ac.za to donate or contribute food items on campus.
