Okkie Smuts Primary School, known as "the small school with the big heart," is a public primary school located in Stanford, Western Cape. The school serves approximately 265 learners with a dedicated team of 12 teachers. The school aims to provide high-quality education and focuses on developing each learner's potential. Okkie Smuts Primary School, located in Stanford, Western Cape, boasts a rich

history dating back to the early 20th century. The school is named after Okkie Smuts, who served as principal from 1920 to 1949. In 1972, the school was officially renamed in his honor, recognizing his significant contributions to education in the community. In 1921, the first hostel was established at the corner of Shortmarket and Morton Streets, with Johnnie Ham and his wife as the initial houseparents. They were later succeeded by Miss Uys, a strict matron who emphasized discipline and self-reliance among the boarders. In 1932, she purchased the old parsonage from the Dutch Reformed Church and converted it into a new hostel. Subsequently, a larger hostel was constructed on the same property to accommodate the school's growing needs. In 1936, sixteen plots of land opposite the old cemetery were acquired for £1,000 to establish a school farm named Kleinbegin. This farm served as a practical agricultural training ground, where students and teachers cultivated products such as milk, grapes, onions, and sweet potatoes. Between 1937 and 1941, the farm also housed a small hostel. Today, Okkie Smuts Primary School is affectionately known as "the small school with the big heart" and continues to play a vital role in the Stanford community's educational landscape.
