From the land where the sun rises, Mpumalanga, in the Gert Sibande Region, lies four TVET Campuses in the beautiful towns of Ermelo, Evander, Standerton and Mpuluzi. The technical colleges of Ermelo, Evander and Standerton were merged to form the Gert Sibande College in 2002 and Sibanesetfu campus (meaning our light) in Mpuluzi was opened in July 2005. Gert Sibande TVET College was named after a farm workers leader from the Eastern Transvaal an African National Congress activist, and one of the first- string accused in the Treason Trial of 1956 to 1961. Gert Sibande was born in the Ermelo district in 1901, the son of a tenant farmer. Gert Sibande TVET College is a Technical, Vocational Education and Training Institution situated in Mpumalanga, South Africa. The College offers nationally certified training programs that are unit standard based and SAQA approved. Qualified and competent staff is available to give relevant education and training in Educational Programs which aim to enable learners to lead productive lives and make meaningful contributions to their community and the Nation as a whole. Qualified moderators and assessors give training in line with Department Of Education’s directive to implement Outcomes Based Education through eLearning methodology in order to service on site learners as well as distance learners. World class standards and well utilized computer and practicum rooms ensure that learners receive practical training. The curriculum develops the learner to his/her full potential. Business and Engineering theory is supplemented with practical training in line with standards from industry.

2007 saw the implementation of the then new National Certificate (Vocational) which is being offered by GSC. It has replaced the then mandatory N1 to N3 with courses in order to empower learners with skills to be employed, to alleviate poverty and unemployment. Subjects may then be chosen from a vocational program to provide the learner with high levels of specialization in that specific field. Gert Sibande TVET College attended the North West/Mpumalanga Regional Student Support Services Capacity Building Programme, held at Premier Hotel The Winkler in White River, Mpumalanga, from 13 to 14 October 2026.

The College’s Deputy Principal: Academic, Mr Phuti Modiba, was part of the capacity-building programme. Among the attendees were the Student Support Services (SSS) team and representatives from Communications and Marketing. This broad representation recognised that supporting students required a coordinated effort across academic, support and communication functions.

Under the theme “Reimagining Student Support Services for the Future of TVET,” the programme focused on moving from reactive assistance towards proactive approaches that identified students’ needs early and supported their progress throughout their studies. A central discussion explored the integration of Student Support Services into occupational programmes through a process-mapping approach.

The agenda also addressed student governance, extracurricular activities, regional performance and emerging priorities. Further sessions covered transitional arrangements through the South African Qualifications Authority lens, the College Entrepreneurship Development Programme, and the role of strategic marketing and communication in strengthening the TVET brand.

These discussions connected directly with the shared responsibility of creating an accessible, inclusive and supportive learning environment. Disability Support brought attention to barriers to participation; SSS coordinators connected students with assistance; lecturing personnel contributed classroom insight; and Communications and Marketing helped ensure that information about opportunities and support reached those who needed it.

Participation in the programme offered the team an opportunity to exchange experiences with regional colleagues and identify practical approaches that could inform student support at the College

Balfour Campus today recognised its top-performing students for the 2025 academic year, presenting merit certificates and tokens of appreciation in recognition of their academic achievements.

The programme commenced with an opening prayer led by Pastor Mondli Nxumalo, followed by a motivational session organised by the College’s Students’ Representative Council (SRC). The session featured Siya Mamba, a professional electrical engineer, Project Management Professional, renewable energy specialist, entrepreneur, career coach, mentor and motivational speaker.

Beginning at Balfour Campus today, Mamba will visit the College’s campuses through to 16 October 2026, sharing advice and words of encouragement with students as they prepare for their external examinations. His sessions aim to emphasise the importance of commitment, perseverance and remaining focused on academic goals.

The programme culminated in the presentation of awards to the campus’s top achievers, with special recognition given to the two highest-performing students of the 2025 academic year.

Sannah Maleso Ngozo emerged as the overall top achiever, achieving an impressive average of 83,87% and obtaining eight distinctions in Management Assistant Intro N4-N4. Nhlanhla Charity Mahlangu was named runner-up, achieving an average of 81,71% and obtaining five distinctions in Office Administration Level 2.

The achievements of these students reflect their dedication and hard work, while serving as an inspiration to their peers. As students prepare for their external examinations, the College encourages them to draw motivation from these accomplishments, remain focused on their studies and strive for academic excellence

The event aimed to promote an appreciation of students’ cultural heritage while recognising and celebrating the outstanding academic achievements of students who excelled during the 2025 academic year. Today, the office of Job Placement and Partnerships, in partnership with the Energy & Water Sector Education Training Authority (EWSETA), conducted an induction programme at the Standerton Campus Hall for 100 Business and Services Studies students who have completed their N6 qualifications.

The students, specialising in Hospitality, Management Assistance, Financial Management, Human Resources, Business Management and Public Management, were introduced to an 18-month Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) opportunity to gain practical workplace experience and apply the knowledge and skills acquired during their studies.

The programme is scheduled to commence on 1 November 2026 and conclude on 30 April 2028, allowing participating students to strengthen their professional competencies and gain exposure to the world of work

Skills Academy, in partnership with MARC, the Department of Social Development (DSD), Sakhisizwe Responsibility Centre and Family and Community Services (FCS), visited Thobelani Secondary School for an awareness campaign aimed at Grade 11 learners.

The campaign formed part of the END GBVF 100 Days Challenge and focused on raising awareness around gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF), as well as addressing social ills affecting young people.

The engagement provided learners with an opportunity to receive information, discuss challenges they may face and learn about available support services and resources within their communities
