🌕 LOOK UP! A Lunar Eclipse Is Coming
Greenhaven Learning Institute invites our learners, parents, and staff to take a moment to look towards the night sky as we experience a fascinating partial lunar eclipse on Friday, 28 August 2026.
A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth moves between the Sun and the Moon, causing Earth’s shadow to fall across the Moon. During a partial lunar eclipse, only part of the Moon passes through the darkest part of Earth’s shadow, creating a beautiful and unusual appearance.
🕐 When can we see it in South Africa?
The eclipse begins during the early hours of Friday morning:
🌑 Penumbral eclipse begins: 03:23
🌒 Partial eclipse begins: 04:33
🌕 Maximum eclipse: approximately 06:12
📍 Look towards: the western sky
The Moon will be very low on the horizon around maximum eclipse, so a clear view towards the west will be important.
🔭 What can we expect?
As the eclipse progresses, part of the Moon will gradually move into Earth’s shadow. The Moon may take on a darker, reddish appearance as the eclipse reaches its strongest point. Almost the entire visible Moon will enter the darker shadow during this deep partial eclipse.
This is a wonderful opportunity for our learners to experience science, nature and astronomy in action and to appreciate the incredible movements of our planet and Moon.
