John Mavuma Nembula (1860–1897) was the first Black physician in southern Africa. Born in Amanzimtoti, Natal (South Africa), he was the grandson of an Amaqwabi chief. His family fled Zulu attacks and found refuge at an American missionary mission led by Dr. Newton Adams.
In 1881, Nembula was sent to Chicago, Illinois to help publish a Zulu Bible translation. He then studied at a preparatory school and earned his medical degree in 1887 — a remarkable achievement given his impoverished background and the lack of educational opportunities for Black people in southern Africa at the time.
