What a beautiful way to celebrate our Matric Class of 2026.

This year’s Matric Farewell, themed A Night in Marrakech, was an evening of extraordinary beauty, celebration and memories that our Grade 12s will carry with them long after their school years have ended.

A very special thank you to Mrs Rust, whose vision, creativity and enormous effort once again gave our Matrics a truly spectacular farewell.

Our sincere gratitude also goes to the Lewis family for the remarkable, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to host this year’s farewell at the magnificent Dylan Lewis Sculpture Garden. It was an extraordinary setting for an extraordinary milestone in our students’ lives.

And to the Harris family, thank you for your generous support and assistance in bringing the evening together and helping to make it so unforgettable with your Events Company, ConverStations.

To our Matrics: this was your night — a moment to celebrate the friendships, memories and journey that have brought you to the threshold of what comes next.

Celebrating Heritage Day at MMA

At Montgomery & Miller Academy, we marked Heritage Day with a school Braai Day — good food, laughter and time together as a community.

South Africa's heritage is not one story. It is made up of many histories, cultures, traditions and identities, and Heritage Day gives us an opportunity to recognise and celebrate that diversity.

For us, it was also a chance simply to come together — because belonging is built not only in classrooms, but in the ordinary moments we share with one another.

A change in perspective is part of learning.

Education should do more than help young people accumulate knowledge. It should gradually change the way they see — themselves, other people, problems and possibilities.

Sometimes that happens in a classroom. Sometimes it happens through a difficult question, a new experience, a conversation, or simply encountering something from a different perspective.

At Montgomery & Miller Academy, we want our learners to leave us with more than academic knowledge. We want them to have developed the confidence to think independently, the curiosity to question what they encounter, and the willingness to reconsider what they think they know.

Because growth is not always about knowing more.

The one-on-one moments we treasure at Montgomery & Miller Academy.

A Grade 10 Sciences lesson — and a moment to stop, look closely at a learner's thinking, work through a question together and make sure that understanding is developing.

These moments matter.

Our intentionally small classes create opportunities for teachers to notice where learners are, respond to what they need, and challenge them to keep moving forward.

Sometimes good teaching happens with the whole class. Sometimes it happens across a table, one question at a time.

Who is doing the thinking?

Learning is not a passive process.

When learners are required to explain, retrieve, organise and communicate what they know, they have to engage with knowledge differently.

At Montgomery & Miller Academy, we want learners doing more than listening to the thinking of others. We want them developing the confidence and competence to articulate their own.

The aim is not simply to have learners hear more. It is to have them think more.

Who is doing the thinking in the classroom?

It sounds like a simple question. But it sits at the heart of how we think about teaching at Montgomery & Miller Academy.

Learning does not happen simply because a teacher has explained something well.

It happens when the learner has to think.

When they retrieve what they know.
When they attempt an answer before being given one.
When they solve a problem.
When they explain their reasoning.
When they make a mistake, reconsider it and try again.

A good teacher provides instruction, modelling, guidance and feedback. But the goal is not to remove every difficulty from learning.

It is to create the conditions in which learners increasingly learn to think for themselves.

That means there will be moments when a teacher explains.

And moments when the teacher deliberately steps back.

Because ultimately, the person doing the thinking is the person doing the learning.

At Montgomery & Miller Academy, we don't simply ask: “What did the teacher teach?”

We also ask:

“What did the learner have to think about today?”
