Some achievements tell us where a learner is. Growth tells us how far they have come.
Joanna Burman has much to celebrate.
Now achieving an 82% overall average with four distinctions, Joanna has also improved her overall average by 10 percentage points β a significant academic progression during her time at Montgomery & Miller Academy.
We believe both deserve recognition.
The result matters. But so does the growth behind it: the learning, persistence and continued development that allow a learner to move beyond where they started.
Joanna's results reflect both strong academic achievement and meaningful progress.
Congratulations, Joanna. We are incredibly proud of you.

Some practical assessments require very willing quality control. π«
Our Consumer Studies students have been putting their baking skills into practice β and fortunately, there was no shortage of volunteers when it came to evaluating the results.
Judging by how quickly the chocolate cake disappeared, we think this one passed the test.
Learning can be rigorous.
It can also be delicious.

Some conversations are worth making time for.
For Women's Day, we brought the women and girls of Montgomery & Miller together across generations β not for a presentation about what it means to be a woman, but for a conversation about it.
Over something to eat, we talked.
About the expectations placed on women.
About the rules nobody ever formally wrote, but many of us somehow learned.
About what has changed between generations β and what perhaps hasn't changed enough.
About strength, independence, vulnerability, ambition, relationships, identity and the many different ways there are to be a woman.
There was wisdom in the room, but it didn't travel in only one direction.
Our younger women had questions and perspectives worth hearing. Our older women had experiences worth sharing. And somewhere between the two was the reminder that growing up is partly about deciding what we will carry forward β and what we are allowed to leave behind.
Perhaps that is one of the most valuable things generations of women can offer one another:
not a set of rules for how to be a woman, but more freedom to decide for ourselves what being one will mean.
A very special Women's Day at Montgomery & Miller Academy.

+19.1 percentage points.
That is how much Miane's overall academic average has improved since joining Montgomery & Miller Academy.
But a number like this tells only part of the story.
Academic growth of this magnitude does not happen in a single test, a single term, or because someone suddenly becomes more capable. It is built over time β through effort, persistence, support, encouragement, and the willingness to keep engaging when the work is difficult.
We are enormously proud of what Miane has achieved.
Not simply because her marks have changed, but because achievement can change the way a young person begins to see themselves.
Sometimes we wait for confidence before we are willing to attempt difficult things.
But sometimes it happens the other way around.
We try. We persist. We discover that we are more capable than we thought.
And confidence follows.
Well done, Miane. This achievement is yours. π€

96%.
An exceptional result in the Grade 12 Consumer Studies Practical Examination β and a beautiful example of what skill, preparation and attention to detail can produce.
Practical examinations ask something different of our learners.
It is not enough to know.
They must plan, prepare, manage their time, solve problems as they arise and ultimately turn knowledge into something they can do.
A 96% result deserves to be celebrated.
But so does the work behind it.
We are incredibly proud of this achievement by Aimee Harris β and that Swiss roll looks rather deserving of a distinction too.

Confidence doesn't always come before we do something difficult.
Sometimes we have to begin before we feel completely ready.
Attempt the question we're not sure we can answer. Work through the problem before asking someone else to solve it. Allow ourselves to get something wrong. Ask for help when we genuinely need it. And try again.
These may not look like particularly courageous moments.
But learning requires small acts of courage every day.
At Montgomery & Miller Academy, we believe young people need both challenge and support.
Our role is not to remove every difficulty from their path, nor to step in so quickly that they never discover what they can do for themselves.
Sometimes learning happens independently.
Sometimes it happens alongside others.
Sometimes it requires a teacher to sit beside you and guide the next step.
And, increasingly, we step back.
Because confidence is not always what allows a young person to try.
Sometimes confidence is what develops because they did.

Belonging changes more than a learner's experience at school.
It changes the way they begin to see themselves.
One parent recently shared these words with us:
"For the first time, I see my child looking ahead with confidence, belief in herself, and a real sense of possibility."
There are few compliments more meaningful than knowing a young person has begun to believe in themselves.
While academic achievement will always matter, we also believe that confidence, hope and a sense of belonging are powerful foundations for lifelong learning.
When learners know they are seen, valued and supported, they are often willing to take risks they never thought possible.
We are grateful to walk that journey alongside our learners and their families.

Earlier this week, we shared our belief that great education isn't about removing challenge.
It's about helping young people become increasingly capable of thinking for themselves.
Today we celebrate some of the learners whose dedication, perseverance and commitment to that journey are reflected in their Term 2 results.
Congratulations to our Term 2 Top Achievers.
We are proud not only of what you have achieved, but of the young people you are becoming.
