Somerset West Private School

Somerset West Private School opened its doors in 1998 with 8 learners. Today, we have 200 learners, ranging from Grade 8 to Post Matric.

Today, we have 200 learners, ranging from Grade 7 to Post Matric. In 2007 we started our primary school to satisfy the demand of our parents . Initially, we had 4 learners, but the school has presently reached 27 learners. We concentrate on inculcating the basic skills. Our main aim is to teach Writing, Reading and Arithmetic (Maths). Learners are taught to understand Maths and Science through investigation, and are not taught “parrot fashion” – we learn through exploring and investigation. Learners can only learn if they are happy, relaxed, stimulated, and feel comfortable in their environment. That is our secret to success! Join us in this very exciting journey!

🏆 South African Mathematics Teams Competition! 🏆

We are proud of Benjamin Greeff, who represented the Boland team, and Qwayd Joubert, at the South African Mathematics Teams Competition (SAMTC) on Saturday 19 September!

The competition was held at the Mathematics Building Stellenbosch University, where our learners tackled a challenging individual paper before joining forces with the rest of their team for the team paper, working alongside fellow mathletes from across the region.

Both boys represented our school with pride, showing off the strong mathematical thinking and problem-solving skills they've built over the year. Well done to both of you - we couldn't be prouder! 🎉📐

✨🇿🇦 A DREAM THAT’S TAKING LIENKE ALL THE WAY TO PARIS! 🇫🇷✨

We are absolutely thrilled and incredibly proud of our Grade 10 learner, Lienke van Rooyen, whose modelling journey is taking her from the South African runway to Paris Fashion Week! 🥹❤️

Lienke’s journey began at South Africa Kids Fashion Week, where she had the opportunity to walk for AMR, Embermen, Novadona and Sira by Sharica. What an incredible experience it was — and little did she know that this would be the beginning of something truly special. 🌟

Now, AMR Couture has invited Lienke to walk for him at Paris Fashion Week! 🇫🇷✨

From stepping onto the runway in South Africa to preparing to walk on one of the world's most prestigious fashion stages, this is such a special and exciting milestone in Lienke’s journey.

Lienke, we are so proud of you! ❤️ Your courage to dream, your dedication and the confidence you bring to every opportunity are truly inspiring.

⛳🏆 Congratulations, Zoe! 🏆⛳

We are incredibly proud of our talented golfer, Zoe, who recently competed in the 2026 SA Kids Golf Junior Africa Challenge at San Lameer Country Club in KwaZulu-Natal.

Zoe delivered an outstanding performance, finishing 3rd in the Girls Under 15–18 age group! 🥉👏

The Junior Africa Challenge is one of Africa’s premier junior golf events, bringing together talented young golfers from across Africa and internationally. The 2026 tournament attracted 165 junior golfers from seven countries, with players aged 5–18 competing over three rounds of medal-format golf.

To achieve a podium finish in such a competitive field is a wonderful accomplishment and a testament to Zoe’s dedication, skill and love for the game. ⛳💪

🏆📚 ATKV Junior Afrikaanse Olimpiade 🇿🇦✨

Ons is ongelooflik trots op ons Graad 8- en 9-leerders wat aan die ATKV Junior Afrikaanse Olimpiade deelgeneem het! 🌟

Altesaam 16 leerders het ons skool in hierdie uitdagende Afrikaanse taal kompetisie verteenwoordig, waar hulle hul woordeskat, begrip en taalvaardighede op die proef gestel het.

’n Spesiale gelukwensing aan ons Graad 9-leerders, met Leamé en Milla wat ’n besonderse 89% behaal het, gevolg deur Benji met 86% en Emily met 78%. 👏🎉

Ons Graad 8-leerders het die uitdaging ook met entoesiasme aangepak en waardevolle ervaring opgedoen in die hantering van onbekende tekste, die identifisering van sleutelwoorde en -frases, asook die toepassing van hul leesbegripvaardighede in ’n uitdagende omgewing.

Yesterday, we celebrated the birthday of our wonderful Principal, Mr Morne Coetzer! 🥳

🔬 Big news from the Eskom Expo! 🔬

Huge congratulations to our brilliant Somerset West Private School learners who showcased their innovative scientific projects at the Stellenbosch Regional Eskom Expo at Stellenbosch University!
Our young innovators brought home fantastic results:

🥇 Carson Doyle (Gr 9) – Gold Award for Pyro-Buddy, an early fire alarm "buddy" system designed to save lives in informal settlements.
🥈 Marcia Mabenge (Gr 8) – Silver Award for her engineering project, creating a model of a robotic hand.
🥉 Declan Louw (Gr 9) – Bronze Award for his clever environmental project on a smart-myco filter.

🧪🔬 Putting Science to the Test! 🔬🧪

On 4 August 2026, our learners proudly represented Somerset West Private School in the Science Olympiad, hosted by the South African Science Olympiads! 🌟

This was no ordinary test! Olympiad questions challenge learners to think beyond the classroom, applying their understanding, analysis, problem-solving and critical-thinking skills to challenging scientific problems. 🧠💡

We are incredibly proud of every learner who stepped up to the challenge, embraced the experience and represented our school with enthusiasm! 👏🏼🏆

The results are in the works, and certificates and results will be released and presented later this year. We can’t wait to celebrate their achievements! 🎉

We are incredibly proud to celebrate the outstanding achievement of Cayleigh Pearce, whose piece “The things we mourn that never died” has been selected for publication in English Alive 2026! 🎉📝

English Alive, the South African Council for English Education’s annual anthology, is celebrating its 60th birthday this year — making this recognition an especially wonderful achievement. 🇿🇦📖

Cayleigh’s work will be published alongside the writing of talented young writers from across South Africa. We are so proud to see the creativity and talent of our learners recognised on a national platform. 🌟
