Caffeine
Caffeine is the only psychoactive drug legally available to children and their consumption of it is very widespread. A can of cola, has the same amount of caffeine as a cup of strong coffee. It is hardly surprising, therefore, that children commonly experience caffeine withdrawal.
A study was done recently on children aged 9-10 who habitually consumed the equivalent of no more than two cans of cola per day and showed these children demonstrated decreased alertness relative to low users. Their alertness did rise to baseline levels when they had received some caffeine, but only for a very short while. This study echo’s the results of various adult studies.
Unilaterally it appears that a ‘caffeine fix’ provides only a momentary spike in alertness, whereas the state of alertness offered by a caffeine-free lifestyle is much more constant.
