The skill of writing begins with mark making. It is easy to dismiss the different lines and circles children create on paper as mere ‘scribbles’, but actually, children are mark making, the first step towards writing.

It is incredibly important to allow them opportunities to develop this skill physically as well as allowing them to be creative and develop their imagination.

There are plenty of ways of developing this skill in kids while making it fun.
Varying the size, colour and texture of the paper can make a difference to mark-making experiences and allow access to different materials, such as pencils, pens, crayons koki’s, chalk and paintbrushes. A very large paper will give an active child room to spread out, explore and use larger movements.

Getting outdoors and painting with paintbrushes and water onto wood, paving or bricks is another exciting way that doesn’t need any cleaning up afterwards. In our home using chalk on the paving outside has always been a favourite and many hours have been spent creating magical creatures and drawings. My daughter, now 11, still does this.
