South Africa lost a great earth warrior, leader, and incredible human being this week.
Claire Janisch was the founder and CEO of Biomimicry South Africa. Her brain was an astounding encyclopedia of nature's form and function, her passion was infectious and she was whole-heartedly committed to opening the world's eyes to a better way of doing - that we are capable of creating conditions conducive to life in all that we design and build.
I was introduced to Claire by a mutual colleague and she began hosting her Biomimicry Immersions at the SSLI in 2018. I was so inspired and proud to be involved in hosting these immersions. As an ecologist who has spent so long learning ABOUT nature she planted a new seed in my mind - rather, what can I learn FROM nature?
At her memorial today, Claire was described aptly as a pollinator, and an ecosystem engineer, a tribute to her impact. She will forever remain a role mode to me demonstrating that one person's passion can create a wave and that wave can change a lot.
Because I, for one, plan to be a part of the tsunami.
