UNDERSTANDING ELECTRODES πŸ”©

πŸ‘¨πŸΏβ€πŸ A WELDER DOESN'T JUST PICK UP AN ELECTRODE AND START WELDING.

Choosing and handling the right electrode is an important part of Shielded Metal Arc Welding.

During practical training, learners develop an understanding of how electrodes affect the welding process and finished weld.

Technical knowledge + practical application = stronger skills.

At FDT Training Centre, we want learners to understand why they are doing something β€” not simply how to do it.

Knowledge creates competence. Practice creates confidence.

STRIKING THE ARC ⚑

⚑ THAT FIRST ARC IS WHERE CONFIDENCE STARTS.

Learning Shielded Metal Arc Welding requires patience, control and practice.

At FDT Training Centre, learners practise striking and maintaining the welding arc while developing better control of:

πŸ”₯ Arc length
πŸ”₯ Electrode angle
πŸ”₯ Travel speed
πŸ”₯ Heat
πŸ”₯ Weld consistency

The more you practise, the more confident your hands become.

One arc. One weld. One skill at a time.

PROGRAMME EXPLAINER: WHY PRACTICAL TRAINING MATTERS πŸ› οΈ

⚑ YOU CAN READ ABOUT ELECTRICITY β€” BUT TECHNICAL CONFIDENCE COMES FROM PRACTICE.

Practical electrician training gives learners an opportunity to work with tools, components, wiring and electrical systems in a controlled learning environment.

They learn to:

βœ… Follow procedures
βœ… Work accurately
βœ… Apply safety principles
βœ… Test their work
βœ… Identify problems
βœ… Improve their technique

Technical careers require technical practice.

That is why hands-on learning matters at FDT Training Centre.

CAREER OUTCOME: BECOME THE PERSON WHO SOLVES THE PROBLEM πŸ”

πŸ’‘ WHEN THE POWER STOPS, SOMEONE NEEDS TO KNOW WHERE TO START LOOKING.

Electricians are problem-solvers.

They need patience, technical understanding, accuracy and respect for safety.

Electrical training helps learners start developing the mindset needed to:

πŸ” Identify problems
⚑ Understand electrical systems
🧰 Use the correct tools
πŸ“ Work methodically
🦺 Prioritise safety

Build a skill that helps keep homes, businesses and industries operating.

CAREER OUTCOME πŸ‘·πŸΏβ€β™‚οΈ

⚑ WHERE CAN ELECTRICAL SKILLS TAKE YOU?

Electrical skills are needed across many parts of the economy.

A learner developing electrical knowledge can begin building a pathway towards opportunities connected to:

🏭 Manufacturing
πŸ—οΈ Construction
🏒 Commercial buildings
🏠 Residential environments
βš™οΈ Industrial operations
πŸ”§ Maintenance
β˜€οΈ Renewable energy environments

Skills create options.

Train for more than a certificate. Train for a career.

SAFETY FIRST 🦺

πŸ”₯ BEFORE THE SPARKS FLY, SAFETY COMES FIRST.

A professional welder understands that protecting yourself and those around you is part of the job.

Our QCTO SMAW learners develop safe workshop habits while gaining practical welding experience.

From protective clothing and welding helmets to safe equipment handling and workspace preparation β€” safety becomes part of every task.

🦺 Protect yourself.
⚑ Respect the equipment.
πŸ”₯ Control the environment.
πŸ‘¨πŸΏβ€πŸ Work like a professional.

THE WORKSHOP STARTS HERE πŸ”₯

πŸ‘¨πŸΏβ€πŸ DAY IN THE LIFE OF A QCTO SHIELDED METAL ARC WELDER (SMAW) LEARNER

Every great weld starts before the arc is struck.

At FDT Training Centre, learners begin by preparing their workstations, checking equipment and making sure the welding area is safe and ready.

🦺 PPE checked
πŸ”§ Equipment prepared
πŸ”© Materials selected
πŸ“ Measurements confirmed

πŸ”₯ DAY IN THE LIFE OF A QCTO SHIELDED METAL ARC WELDER (SMAW) LEARNER

Helmet on. Gloves ready. Arc struck. ⚑

A typical day at FDT Training Centre is about more than learning how to weld β€” it is about developing the practical discipline and technical skill required in real industrial environments.

Learners spend time:
πŸ”§ Preparing materials and welding equipment
⚑ Practising Shielded Metal Arc Welding techniques
πŸ“ Reading and working to measurements
🦺 Applying workshop and welding safety procedures
πŸ” Inspecting weld quality and improving technique
πŸ’ͺ Building confidence through hands-on practical training

Every weld is another step towards becoming workplace-ready.

Train with purpose. Build with skill. Create your future.

πŸŽ“ INSPIRING THE NEXT GENERATION OF SKILLED PROFESSIONALS! πŸ› οΈπŸŒŸ

One of the highlights of our visit to Vaalrivier School of Skills in Standerton was spending time with the learners and seeing their enthusiasm for practical learning and technical careers.

On Friday, 21 August 2026, the FDT Training Centre team had the opportunity to engage directly with young people who are developing skills that can become the foundation of successful careers.

πŸ‘·πŸΎβ€β™€οΈπŸ‘·πŸΎβ€β™‚οΈ These are our future artisans, technicians, entrepreneurs and industry professionals.

Career Day was about more than talking about jobs. It was about helping learners understand that the skills they are developing today can create opportunities tomorrow.

We encouraged learners to:

πŸ”§ Take pride in practical and technical skills
πŸŽ“ Continue learning and developing their abilities
πŸ’Ό Explore occupational and vocational career opportunities
πŸš€ Think about entrepreneurship and self-employment
🎯 Believe in the value of becoming skilled and work-ready

Seeing learners in their workshop environment reminded us why skills development matters. Every learner deserves the opportunity to discover their potential and understand where their talents can take them.

A big thank you to the learners and staff of Vaalrivier School of Skills for the warm welcome and enthusiastic engagement. πŸ‘

FDT Training Centre is proud to play a role in connecting education, skills and industry β€” and helping young people prepare for meaningful futures.

Your Future. Our Mission.
