Teaching people about how their brains and nervous system work together can be such an amazing shame-breaker for distressing experiences like anxiety, PTSD, overwhelm, and all the physical manifestations of these.
It's not easy to find an image of the brain that is appropriate for young people. Something that captures the complexity beyond downstairs/upstairs metaphors but doesn't look like it was taken from a medical book aimed at grad students. Even more difficult to find an image that includes not just 'brain stem' but also how this connects to our nervous system and senses.

We know that the brain needs to make new neural pathways to convert our oral language to the linguistic code as there is no specific reading center in the brain. ðŸ§
It is hard work! Our brains are quite amazing in how they can create a new reading circuit.
This happens when we bridge our knowledge to practice. As educators, we are busy teaching skills and lessons but are we providing enough practice to allow for the skills to transfer to automaticity? This is a question that we can ask ourselves.
Children who are learning to read need to spend time decoding - the practice of linking speech sounds to print. This decoding work is the heavy lifting that needs to occur during reading instruction to allow for the orthographic mapping process to occur.
While some children may transfer knowledge in one to four exposures, many need more practice to automatize their reading.
Those with dyslexia need explicit and systematic instruction in phonics and ample opportunities to bridge this knowledge to practice. 🔽
Practice is what provides the application of taught skills to become permanent and shouldn't be overlooked or brushed over.
