What is Mechatronics - and why does it matter?

Modern manufacturing is no longer powered by one skill set alone. Today’s automated environments need technicians who understand how mechanical systems, electrical systems, electronics, PLCs, robotics, motor control, process control and computer systems work together.

That is where mechatronics comes in.

At PolytechAfrica, our Mechatronics Technician programme is designed to equip students with the practical, cross-disciplinary skills needed to operate, maintain and support modern industrial and automated environments.

From production lines and robotics to maintenance, automation and control systems - mechatronics is helping shape the future of industry in South Africa.

PolytechAfrica is at Africa Automation Technology Fair 2026, where the focus is on AI, automation, productivity, efficiency, and the pace of technological change across Africa.

AI and automation are accelerating across Africa, and businesses cannot afford to fall behind. To keep pace, industry needs stronger infrastructure, energy capacity, and skilled technical talent.

At PolytechAfrica, we help develop the technical talent needed to support automation, industrial systems, AI-enabled environments, and future-ready operations.

We’re looking to connect with OEMs, system integrators, manufacturers, engineering companies, and industrial businesses ready to act on skills development through student sponsorships, bursaries, Work Integrated Learning placements, and training partnerships.

Our July 2026 intake is now open for technical programmes and industry-relevant short courses.

If you’re at the show, send us a DM to connect with our GM, Tarryn-Lea Brown and discuss how PolytechAfrica can support your skills pipeline.
