As Women’s Month draws to a close, we reflect on the women who lead, mentor and make a lasting impact. 💙

PolytechAfrica was privileged to welcome Prof Seo, Senior Professor at Chicago State University, who spent three days with our students sharing her knowledge and guidance on research, proposal and paper submissions, as well as presentation techniques.

As a professor in both Mathematics and Language, and a senior supervisor to Master’s and PhD students, Prof Seo brought an incredible depth of experience to our students. Her support also extended beyond the classroom, continuing to assist our fourth-year students online whenever they needed guidance.

Moments like these are a beautiful reminder of the value of mentorship, shared knowledge and the connections built between women who are passionate about education and helping others grow.

As we close out Women’s Month, we celebrate women like Prof Seo and Dr Astrid Straussner who continue to share their experience, create opportunities and inspire the next generation.
Prof Seo, thank you for so generously giving your time, knowledge and encouragement to our students. It has been truly invaluable.

The Courage to Keep Becoming

This Women’s Day, PolytechAfrica celebrates Dr Astrid Straussner - a woman whose story is shaped not by grand gestures, but by curiosity, consistency and a deep belief in what people can become.

Astrid has always been interested in how things work. Not only machines and systems, but people too: how they learn, how confidence develops and what happens when someone is given the space to discover their own ability.

“You do not need to know everything,” she says. “You need to be willing to ask questions, to learn and to keep going.”

That belief has become part of the culture at PolytechAfrica.

Here, learning is not about pretending to have all the answers. It is about trying, testing, solving and sometimes getting things wrong.

Because a mistake is not proof that you are incapable.

Often, it is the moment understanding begins.

“You have to be allowed to try,” Astrid explains. “Sometimes something does not work, but then you learn why. That is how confidence grows.”

It is an insight that applies far beyond technical education.

Confidence is rarely something we are simply born with. It is built quietly, through experience. Through attempting something unfamiliar. Through asking the question we were afraid might sound obvious. Through discovering that we can solve a problem which once seemed beyond us.

Astrid’s own journey reflects this kind of growth.

Over time, knowledge became responsibility, responsibility became leadership, and leadership became an opportunity to create a place where others could learn, develop and find their own direction.

She would probably never describe herself as inspirational. She is far more likely to speak about the students, the lecturers and the work still to be done.

But perhaps that is exactly what makes her story so meaningful.

True leadership is not always loud.

Sometimes, it looks like maintaining high standards. Remaining willing to learn. Encouraging someone who is unsure of themselves. Or creating an opportunity that allows another person to see what they are capable of.

Astrid’s message to young women is simple:

“Do not decide too early what you can or cannot do. Give yourself the opportunity to try. You may discover that you are capable of far more than you expected.”

This Women’s Day, we celebrate Dr Astrid Straussner and every woman who continues to learn, contribute, lead and create opportunities for others.

May we all remain curious.

May we never become too experienced to keep learning.

And may we remember that sometimes the most powerful thing we can give another person is the opportunity to discover their own potential.

Happy Women’s Day from PolytechAfrica.
