Masenze Ikusasa

Masenze Ikusasa The course was originally devised by Carolyn Reid and Deyana Thomas in 2007 when the first workshops were presented to a small group of practitioners.

We value our young children and aim to empower the Day Care Practitioners who care for them by providing them with skills to offer stimulating programmes in a safe environment. “A journey begins with the first step” Chinese Proverb
Masenze Ikusasa is a skills training organisation and our aim is to create transferable and easily implementable creative learning methodologies and own resource m

aking. As such we provide practical hands-on training in appropriate methodologies and management skills for Early Childhood Development and encourage the extensive use of transformed recycled waste material resources to create learning resources and equipment. We were asked to assist in providing basic skills training to practitioners in some Day Care Centres being run in people’s homes in Alexandra. Having both worked extensively in other similar areas we took up the challenge and began training from a Community Centre in Alexandra. It has since emerged that there are at least 400-500 such centres running in Alexandra and so there is still a lot of work to do! We have been running for 7years and have trained 220 practitioners from 175 Day Care Centres which has had an impact on about 11 500 children. The course is not SETA accredited but a certificate of attendance and implementation is awarded to those who have complied with all the course requirements. We have 4 enthusiastic facilitators and 4 assistant facilitators who run the workshops every second Saturday in Alexandra. These ladies have all been through the course themselves and selflessly give up their time to share the knowledge and skills they gained with others. They all work in or run ECD centres and are paid a small stipend. We all have a passion for the wellbeing of young children and want to provide opportunities for them to gain good foundational skills to enable efficient learning when they get to school. Our course is aimed at Child Care Workers/Day Mothers working in ECD Day Care Centres in and around Alexandra. Many of these women have no child care training and their educational levels preclude them from formal training programmes offered in the ABET band of Adult education. The course is sponsored although the practitioners contribute R800 for the course which consists of 12 workshops over 6 months. Their contribution covers very basic needs and so we rely heavily on sponsorship to cover the costs of the course. During the course the practitioners make a number of good quality teaching resources and they are provided with a starter pack of art materials and some tools to continue making their own resources. This enables them to implement the methodologies they are taught. The facilitators visit the centres twice during the course, once to provide support and assist where necessary and then again at the end of the course to access and evaluate the levels of implementation in order to award a certificate. The course is practical and hands-on requiring a high degree of implementation of skills learnt in the workshops. We hope to be able to offer the course in other areas of Johannesburg as we are constantly being requested to do this. In the future we would like to be able to run another course in Alexandra and train facilitators from other areas to run these programmes in their own areas.

This is the ultimate aim of our ECD practitioners. Keep on doing what you do to build the future of the young children in your Centres. You are their first experience of learning to understand the world they live in and set them on the path to lifelong learning.

[Children’s Amendment Bill] The EELC welcomes Cabinet’s approval of the Children’s Amendment Bill - a milestone moment for early childhood development in South Africa. 🥳

This Bill affirms that the earliest years of a child’s life are foundational, and that the systems supporting them must be strong, equitable, inclusive, adequately funded, and fit for purpose. ✊🏾

As a proud member of Real Reform for ECD, we have joined a powerful collective voice in championing this reform. Through our advocacy, research, and the lived experiences of the communities and parents we work alongside, we are proud to have contributed to shaping this legislation. ⚖️✊🏾

The EELC is committed to working with government and partners across the sector to ensure the Bill moves swiftly through legislative processes and that it delivers real and lasting change for children and families.
