Yesterday I had a general haircare workshop with an exhausted mom (hair-wise) and her 4 year old daughter, Lethabo.

Normally our general haircare workshops end with an exciting and fun protective style but Lethabo was not having it and severely cried from the start. I tried to calm her down and distract her in asking her to pick the bead colours, brush her own hair or sit in front of a mirror so she could see what I was doing. But none of it helped.

Half way through I just decided to take it all out and massage her scalp with an oil and let her pretend-brush her own hair.

Forcing something like this just creates fear, hesitation and worse: a negative association with her hair. Sometimes you just have to stop and try again another time.

Which is exactly what I did 🌈 I went back this morning and thankfully it went semi-smoothly. There were definitely still some tears but more from the tension than the fear of being hurt again.

The end result is pretty cute - she wanted the blocks “just like her friends”🌈

Last Saturday we hosted a Protective-Styling group workshop with some Moms and their daughters 💫👩🏾‍🦱

After a successful day of meeting new friends, they were taught how to do twists, braids, cornrows and easy DIY styles to do at home that can last up to 2 weeks! 🥳
