1.) Take a look out of the nearest window you can find. See if you can spot clouds, sunshine, plants, rain drops, birds in the sky… Let your gaze take it in. Anything at all.

2.) Breathe in and say out loud: “I can…”

A reminder to survivors of childhood trauma, particularly those that still feel gaslit by their parents or caregivers as adults:

- If their parenting cost you, your mental health it wasn’t good enough.
- If their parenting cost you, your physical wellbeing it wasn’t good enough.
- If their parenting cost you, your ability to form healthy and happy long term relationships it wasn’t good enough.
- If their parent cost you, a healthy self-esteem with an inherent knowing of your unchanging self-worth it wasn’t good enough.

A trauma trigger can feel immensely confusing. Sometimes it’s hard to know where it’s coming from or how to ground ourselves in the present moment again.

🫶 Save this for a moment when you need it most!

Why might it work?

- It immediately changes our focus from the trigger to our own experience.
- Looking up and humming can have a soothing effect on the vagus nerve (engages rest and digest - opposite of trauma response).
- Reparenting ourselves through a trigger can be very comforting and reduce the sense of shock we may be experiencing.
