Based in Salt Rock, the TreeHouse Learning Centre is a unique Remediation Centre that supports children with Autism Spectrum Disorder or generalized learning challenges. B U I L D I N G F O U N D A T I O N S

Our learners are enjoying building structures with their soft brick toys (no hard hats required) We have also explored the importance of building on a strong foundation.

For children with ASD and generalized learning challenges, self regulation and self belief are important foundations in each learners journey. A few of the foundations we believe to be important are :

Focusing attention for short periods
Beginning to label feelings
Briefly delaying gratification
Seeking help from adults when dealing with strong emotions
Recognizing and understanding a range of feelings in oneself and others
Identifying solutions to simple problems
Utilizing strategies like deep breaths and self-talk, with support, to calm down
Developing perspective-taking and early empathy
Focusing attention and persisting on challenging tasks for extended periods

We are exploring oral hygiene at the Learning Centre, which falls under personal Care in our Life Skills course. đź“šLearning these skills at a practical level is essential for children to gain confidence and autonomy in their communities, at home and at school.

Our Life skills course has been divided into 7 sections, and customized for each learners abilities.

1. Executive Functioning Skills
2. Daily Living Skills
3. Personal Care
4. Occupational Skills
5. Safety Awareness
6. Social Skills
7. Self Advocacy

Our learners enjoyed the creative and practical side of the material.

The Treehouse Learning Centre in Salt Rock supports children on the Autism Spectrum or those with learning challenges, between the ages of 8 - 12. This week, we focused on column sums and number placements. In our small learning group, our Tutor works closely with each learner; this one-to-one time facilitates opportunity for various tactile and sensory manipulatives to be included in the learning process.

Many children find aspects of learning difficult and can loose confidence (and ultimately 'give up') when facing challenges. We adopt the following strategies in our learning process :

Visual supports: We use visual aids such as charts, diagrams, and math manipulatives to enhance understanding and reinforce concepts.

Structured routines: We establish clear and predictable routines to provide students with a sense of organization and stability.

Sensory considerations: We take into account the sensory needs of students with autism by providing a quiet space, minimizing distractions, and incorporating sensory breaks when necessary.

Positive reinforcement: We implement a system of positive reinforcement to motivate and encourage students, celebrating their achievements and progress.

At the Treehouse Learning Centre, we are learning about developing a Growth Mindset in all areas of our learning. Learners with learning challenges often face obstacles on their learning journeys and can often loose confidence after repeated setbacks. Learners with a growth mindset are more resilient in the face of setbacks. They don't see failures as a reflection of their worth as a person but rather as an opportunity to learn and grow. This helps them persevere in the face of challenges and view setbacks as a normal part of life.

"When students adopt a growth mindset, they view challenges as ways of progressing toward their desired outcomes. Students who believe they can develop their talents and abilities see roadblocks and critical feedback as methods to gather information they could use to help themselves learn" Dr C Dweck

As parents, we all want our children to grow up feeling secure and calm. Research shows that 1 in 8 learners between the ages of 13-18 suffer from clinically diagnosed anxiety disorders. [1] These learners are deeply susceptible to the impact of stressful events that “affect the way [they] think, act, and feel.”

According to renowned psychologist Daniel Goleman, “happy, calm children learn best.” Researchers have found that a calm and consistent environment improves learning outcomes for children “children need to feel safe to learn.” [2]

We are not only teaching children; we are teaching future adults. Many children with Autism or learning challenges display deficits, in varying degrees, in daily living skills , which are required for independence.
cLearning and consolidating life skills increases children's independence at home, at school and in their communities. By introducing and modeling these skills early, block by block, in a non-threatening environment, our learners gain confidence in learning these skills.
