From the classroom to a world-class genomics lab! 🧬🔬

We are incredibly proud of our 30 Grade 11 learners from the IkamvaYouth Chesterville branch who recently took part in a hands-on science outreach programme at UKZN’s KRISP (KwaZulu-Natal Research Innovation and Sequencing Platform)!

Representing Umkhumbane, Chesterville, Wiggins, Bonela, and Chatsworth Secondary schools, these future scientists spent the day:
🍓 Extracting DNA from strawberries using household ingredients.
🍬 Building 3D virus models using candy to understand molecular structures.
🧪 Touring world-class research facilities to see real-world genomic science in action.

This inspiring day was hosted under KRISP's NextGen-L Programme and supported by the DIPLOMICS Ignite outreach initiative. Even better? This is just the beginning! KRISP plans to host four groups of IkamvaYouth learners across KZN over 2026 and 2027

Inspiring the next generation of scientists! 🥼🔎🧪

Our Grade 11 learners from IkamvaYouth recently visited the KwaZulu-Natal Research Innovation and Sequencing Platform (KRISP) at the UKZN Nelson R. Mandela School of Medicine. 📚✨

The highlights? A hands-on experiment where learners extracted DNA from strawberries using simple household ingredients! 🍓🧬 This awesome activity truly brought science to life, proving that discovery and innovation can begin with everyday materials.

A huge thank you to Krisp for hosting us and inspiring our learners to dream big! 💡🙌

Creativity was on full display at our Gugs Branch during No School Bag Day!
Learners came to the branch carrying their books and stationery in the most unexpected and hilarious ways, from plastic bags and snack packets to household items that had everyone laughing and talking throughout the day.
The day was filled with fun, creativity, and plenty of memorable moments, reminding us how important it is to create spaces where young people can express themselves, connect, and enjoy learning together.
A big shoutout to all the learners who participated and brought such amazing energy to the branch!
