🦖🌊 SWIMMING & FLYING DINOSAURS! 🪽🦕

What a ROAR-some week at Sand Castle Play School! We discovered the difference between swimming and flying dinosaurs — from flippers and wings to their favourite food… fish! 🐟

Our clam shell became a whole dinosaur world! 🌿🪨🐚 We collected natural treasures, added sand and bubbly blue water, built nests for pterodactyl eggs and let our imaginations run wild. We even became pterodactyls ourselves with blankets for wings! 🪽

🎨 We got creative too — painting a plesiosaurus with pompoms, making flying pterodactyls from toilet rolls and creating T-rex jaws with our painted footprints.

Our sensory play was a BIG hit! We hid dinosaur eggs in shaving foam nests and discovered that mixing the sand and water together made the most wonderful, messy dinosaur world. 😄

And of course, there was plenty of dancing, music, outdoor exploring and even dinosaur bowling! 🎶🎳

Learning through play, one little dinosaur adventure at a time! 💚🦖

🦖 DINO-MITE ADVENTURES AT SAND CASTLE! 🦖

“Best week ever!” — Clara summed it up perfectly! 😄🦕

This week we travelled back to prehistoric times to learn all about dinosaurs on land! We discovered the difference between plant-eaters and meat-eaters, sorted our dinosaurs into groups, practised counting with our dino chart, and learned that many plant-eating dinosaurs walked on four legs while meat-eaters often walked on two. 🦖🌿🥩

And then came the BIG adventure… our dinosaurs were frozen! 🧊😱 We had to rescue them by spraying the ice with water and letting the warm sunshine help melt them free. What a mission!

We also had a very exciting visit to the lodge to watch a helicopter land! 🚁 It was incredibly loud, and we got to go closer to see all the buttons, wheels and details. It was amazing to see just how MASSIVE a helicopter is when you’re standing next to it!

Our week was filled with roaring, stomping and plenty of creativity. We danced to the Dinosaur Stomp and Juffrou Linky’s dinosaur song, and Jackson even brought dino tails to school, so we were completely in character! 🦕🦖

🎨 Our creative dino adventures included:
• Making bumpy dinosaur crowns from egg containers
• Creating personalised dinosaurs using our handprints
• Stamping giant dinosaur footprints with dinosaur feet — and then comparing them to our own hands and fingers!
• Making clay dinosaurs with spaghetti spikes and stone plates

🌿 Our sensory dino land was a prehistoric world of its own! We collected leaves, stones and sand to create the land, made a green chia-seed swamp, and added a dam because even dinosaurs need water. 💦🌱 We explored all the different textures, even though the swamp felt a little strange at first!

After all that messy dinosaur fun, our dinos needed a soapy bath! 🛁🫧 We scrubbed them with brushes and sponges and had so much fun with the bubbles.

And finally, we went on a dinosaur excavation! 🔎🦖 Megan hid dinosaurs beneath shredded paper, and we dug them out one by one. Luckily, our little paleontologists are getting VERY good at spotting dinosaurs!

What a week of roars, stomps, messy hands, big adventures and even bigger imaginations! 🦖💚

🐦 Theme: Birds as Pets 🐦

This week at Sand Castle Play School, we discovered what it’s like to care for a pet bird, with our special focus on the adorable budgie! 💙💛

Our dollhouse was transformed into a little budgie cage, complete with food and water bowls. Every morning we made sure our “pet” had fresh food and water and gave the cage a good clean. We quickly learned that budgies can be rather messy eaters! 😄 Our favourite rule? Always keep the cage door closed, or our little budgie might fly away! 🐦💨

While playing at the park, we discovered a real bird’s nest lying on the grass. We carefully inspected it for eggs (luckily, there were none!) and noticed all the natural materials inside — feathers, sticks and grass. We even pretended to be little birds who had escaped from their cage, with Megan having the very important job of catching us and returning us safely! 😂

We enjoyed snack time outside on a blanket and spent time caring for our baby dolls, feeding and looking after them just like we would care for our pet birds. 🍼🐣

🎨 Our creative side came out too! We made colourful pet birds from toilet paper rolls and paper using scissors and Pritt. We were so proud to wear our beautiful birds on our arms! We also made adorable budgies using our painted footprints. Painting each other’s feet was very ticklish and resulted in lots of giggles! We added wings, beaks and eyes using cotton buds and paint. 👣🎨🐦

🫧 For our sensory play, we used pink and blue bath foam to hide our “eggs”, created patterns and experimented with mixing the colours. We also made a big bird bath using leaves and sponges. And, of course, water play is always a favourite! 💦

What a fun week of learning, caring, creating and exploring! 💕🐦

🐦🌸 Theme: Birds as Pollinators 🌸🐦

This week at Sand Castle Play School, we discovered one of the wonderful ways birds help our world — pollination! 🌺

Our little explorers focused on the beautiful local Suikerbekkie, learning how these special birds use their beaks to sip nectar from flowers. As they feed, pollen sticks to their beaks, bodies and feet and is carried from one flower to another. Just like that… they become tiny pollinators! 🐦🌼

We took our learning outdoors with magnifying glasses and explored the flowers around the lodge, getting up close to the pollen. We even transferred some pollen from flower to flower ourselves — we were pollinators too! 🔎🌸

There was plenty of creative fun as well! We made colourful bird wings from cardboard and feathers of different materials, created peg birds and cotton-wool blossoms, and made beautiful Suikerbekkie art using handprints, torn paper and tiny pieces from magazines. 🎨🪶

Our sensory play was a favourite! We made “pollen water” with yellow glitter and watched in amazement as we blew across the surface and created beautiful patterns. Later, we added the most famous pollinators of all — the bees! 🐝💛

We also explored bird seed through art, rubbing and rolling the little seeds to create patterns with our fingers. It felt wonderfully rough and gave us a whole new sensory experience.

And of course, no week of outdoor exploring would be complete without a little adventure! We tested our handmade wings in the sunshine, discovered a puddle on our walk… and simply couldn’t resist jumping in! 💦😂

On Friday, we brought out the instruments for our good-morning songs and danced and moved our bodies to the beat. 🎶💃

A week filled with birds, flowers, creativity, sensory discovery, music, movement and lots of messy fun! 🌸🐦🐝

This week at Sand Castle Play School, our theme was Beautiful Birds, and what a colourful adventure it was! 🐦✨

Our little learners discovered some of nature’s most fascinating birds, from graceful swans and dazzling peacocks to majestic kingfishers and elegant flamingos. We loved watching birds in action, learning about their unique feathers, colours and habits, and singing 5 Little Ducks until everyone knew every word! 🎶

A visit to the bird hide gave us the chance to become quiet little birdwatchers, while outdoor play saw us creating our very own duck pond, feeding the ducks, riding our bikes, hunting for feathers and even pretending to fly as we bounced high on the trampoline! 🦆🚲🌿

Our classroom was filled with creativity as we made fluffy cotton wool swans, colourful felt birds, sponge-painted peacocks, handprint kingfishers, sparkly pink flamingos and even more clay birds. Every activity encouraged imagination, fine motor development and sensory exploration.

From blowing feathers through the air to splashing in our duck pond, this week was packed with learning, laughter and hands-on fun. We loved discovering just how amazing our feathered friends really are! 💙

🐦 This Week at Sand Castle Play School – Birds as Feeders & Nesters 🪺

What a wonderful week of learning, exploring, and making special memories! 💛

This week our little explorers discovered the fascinating world of birds as feeders and nesters. We looked at different kinds of bird nests on the laptop and learned how parent birds lovingly feed and care for their chicks. We then took our learning outdoors, enjoying a nature walk around the lodge where we spotted different bird species and even found several nests from the bird hide!

Our outdoor play was filled with imagination as we transformed our doll’s house into a giant bird’s nest using blankets and pillows. We also worked together to create our very own obstacle course by combining our jungle gyms, encouraging teamwork, problem-solving, and lots of laughter.

On Monday, we shared a bittersweet farewell with one of our very first little learners. ❤️ He has been part of our Sand Castle family since the day we opened our doors and, for a while, was our very first and only little student. We will miss him dearly and wish him every happiness and success on his next adventure. A heartfelt thank you to Kyle and Mart-Mari for joining us and making his farewell extra special by baking the most delicious pancakes for everyone to enjoy.

Our creative little hands were busy all week! We used playdough to make birds, nests, and eggs before painting our nests and eggs in beautiful colours. We also painted paper, tore it into tiny pieces, and used them to line our paper nests—an activity that helped strengthen our pincer grip and fine motor skills. We finished off by colouring beautiful bird pictures.

For sensory play, we explored a variety of textures using tea leaves, salt, rice, shaving cream, sand, and food colouring. Mixing everything together with our hands before drawing pictures in the colourful mixture made for a wonderfully messy, creative, and exciting sensory experience!

Another week filled with learning through play, curiosity, creativity, and unforgettable memories. We can’t wait to see what next week brings! 💙

✈️ Theme of the Week: People in the Sky ☁️🚁

This week our little explorers took to the skies as we learned all about the wonderful things that can fly! 🌈

We discovered that hot air balloons need hot air to float high into the sky and that kites need plenty of wind to soar. The children loved learning about these exciting ways of flying.

Our creative hands were busy making colourful helicopters using paper cups and cotton buds for propellers, as well as aeroplanes from recycled toilet rolls and ice cream sticks. One of the week’s highlights was creating a parachute and watching one of our brave soft toys safely jump from the jungle gym!

We were also delighted to welcome some special little friends to join us. Together we made playdough aeroplanes, built a landing strip in the sandpit, and let our imaginations take flight.

Our sensory play was full of fun as we used shaving cream to make fluffy clouds, added blue pebbles for raindrops, and even turned our clouds into aeroplane landing strips before drawing our own aeroplanes with our fingers.

To top off another wonderful week, we enjoyed our regular beach outing, where we explored nature, played together, and made more happy memories in the fresh air. 🌊💙

Learning through play is always an adventure at Sand Castle Play School! 🏖️✨

🌦️ Theme of the Week: The Weatherman 🌈

What a wonderful way to kick off the new term! Our little learners explored the fascinating world of weather through stories, songs, sensory play and creative art activities.

We sang along to Mr. Sun and I Hear Thunder, discovered how beautiful rainbows are made, and enjoyed the heartwarming stories The Boy and the Rainbow and Ava and the Rainbow Who Stayed.

The children got wonderfully messy creating fluffy clouds with glue and shaving cream, mixing their own “thunder clouds,” painting colourful rainbows with cotton-ball paintbrushes, and printing bright, fiery suns using their hands. We also used natural treasures collected from our school’s veld to create beautiful weather-themed artwork, allowing their imaginations to shine.

Outdoor play was just as exciting! The children loved making their own rainbow with an umbrella and watching a homemade rain cloud sprinkle “rain” into the sandpit, bringing plenty of smiles and laughter.

To make the week even more special, we welcomed some extra little friends into our class on Thursday, creating new friendships and lots of happy memories.

We’re so excited for all the adventures this new term has in store! ☀️🌧️🌈💙

🪱 Theme of the Week: Worms! 🪱

What a wonderful way to end the term! While our theme was all about worms, much of our excitement was spent preparing for our very special Grandparents’ Day – and what a fantastic success it was! Our little stars did an amazing job entertaining their grandparents, and we were so proud of the confidence and enthusiasm they showed.

Our creative activities were lots of fun! We coloured bright, rainbow worms and explored a unique painting technique by dipping pieces of string into paint and dragging them across paper to create wiggly worm masterpieces.

To celebrate our wonderful grandparents, we made heartfelt cards using our handprints, colourful hearts, glitter, and a special message to show just how much we love them. 💖

The fun continued outside, where we used bath foam on our black wall to create squiggly worms, and we rolled and shaped beautiful worms with playdough.

It has been a joyful, creative week filled with learning, laughter, and special memories. Thank you to all our grandparents for making Grandparents’ Day so memorable, and we wish all our families a wonderful school holiday! 🌈✨
