Did you know there are 5 components to learning how to read? Reading is a complex process, but explicit and systematic support in all 5 components can bring much success.

1) Phonological and Phonemic Awareness- These skills build a strong foundation for reading and spelling.

2) Phonics- knowledge of what letters and letter combinations make the sounds in our words. This also includes spelling rules so we know what letter combinations to choose when spelling different words (c or k, j or g, oi or oy, etc). Learning how to map words according to their sounds is very beneficial to both decoding (reading) and encoding (spelling) words.

3) Vocabulary- including morphology with Greek and Latin roots. This is crucial to comprehension. It also aids in decoding and encoding.

4) Fluency- Practicing prosody, speed, phrasing, expression, etc helps us become more fluent readers, which aids in comprehension. Repeated readings are a successful way to practice this.

5) Comprehension- The goal of reading. Having strategies and building skills to comprehend what read is crucial
