In a profession traditionally dominated by men, Constable Kgabo Tsipa Penelope Nakeng (37) continues to inspire many women through her dedication, technical expertise, and passion for vehicle mechanics within the South African Police Service (SAPS).

Const Nakeng joined the on 05 October 2020 as an Artisan Constable in Mechanical Engineering at Kimberley SAPS Garage. She was later transferred to Polokwane SAPS Garage on 15 September 2025, where she currently serves with pride and commitment under the leadership of Captain Manamela.

Armed with N6 qualifications in both Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, Constable Nakeng has become one of the few women excelling in the demanding field of vehicle maintenance and repairs within the SAPS environment.

Her daily responsibilities include servicing and repairing state vehicles, electrical and diagnostic fault repairs, component overhauls, and ensuring that SAPS vehicles remain safe, reliable, and operational to support policing duties across the province.

Despite the challenges associated with the mechanical industry, Const Nakeng says her passion for the work keeps her motivated every day.

“I am passionate about my work and I know how to get the job done. I believe your value is determined by the results you produce, not gender, appearance, or background,” said Const Nakeng.

She further encourages women to confidently pursue careers in technical and mechanical environments, stressing the importance of mastering skills, remaining confident, and speaking up respectfully in the workplace.

Const Nakeng has also completed the Orientation Programme for Newly Appointed SAPS Employees as well as the Nissan Motor Vehicle Product Training Workshop, further sharpening her technical expertise.

Reflecting on her journey, she fondly remembers the first vehicle she repaired independently.

“It was a very difficult job, but when that car started cranking and idling properly, it filled my heart with joy. That moment gave me confidence in my career and remains unforgettable,” she added.

Although she works full-time at the SAPS garage and has never been involved in arrests, Constable Nakeng plays a critical behind-the-scenes role in ensuring police vehicles remain operational for members fighting crime on the frontlines.

She also highlighted the importance of balancing work and family life through discipline, proper time management, and maintaining a strong support system at home.

The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, commended Const Nakeng for her dedication and commitment to service excellence.

“Women such as Constable Nakeng continue to break barriers and prove that excellence knows no gender. Her commitment and technical contribution to the SAPS are highly commendable and inspirational to many young women aspiring to enter technical professions,” said Lieutenant General Hadebe.

With gratitude and humility, I would like to formally announce that effective from the 1st of March 2026 I was appointed to act as the Acting Chief Education Specialist: Circuits Coordination in Bojanala District, serving both the Moses Kotane and Rustenburg Local Education Offices (LEOs).

This new responsibility now allows me the privilege to support and coordinate 13 circuits across the district, with Boitshoko Circuit remaining one of the circuits under my leadership and support.

Tomorrow the 18th of May 2026, I will officially hand over the day-to-day leadership and management of Boitshoko Circuit to the Acting Circuit Manager whom I will formally announce and warmly welcome to the Circuit.

Serving Boitshoko Circuit has been one of the greatest honours of my professional journey. Together we have built a strong culture of excellence, accountability and teamwork. I remain proud of the principals, SMTs, teachers, support staff, learners, SGBs, parents and stakeholders who continue to make this circuit a centre of excellence.

As part of the transition, I will also be handing over the administration rights of this page to the Circuit Administration team. I will continue to actively manage and coordinate communication through the Boitshoko Circuit Rustenburg Bojanala District page in my current role.

Thank you for the unwavering support, dedication and commitment to education transformation. The work continues, the vision remains alive and together we will continue changing lives through quality education.
