As South Africa’s automotive industry moves towards Electric Vehicles (EVs), Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) and other New Energy Vehicles (NEVs), the need for quality, recognised and industry-relevant training is becoming increasingly important.

But what does accreditation actually mean?

In Episode 2 of “Let’s Talk EV SA”, we explore the role of accreditation in EV/HEV training and skills development, and why it matters for technicians, training providers and the future of South Africa’s automotive industry.

🔋⚡ 𝐅𝐈𝐑𝐒𝐓 𝐎𝐅 𝐈𝐓𝐒 𝐊𝐈𝐍𝐃: 𝐀𝐒𝐃𝐂 𝐀𝐜𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐝 🔌
A customer drives home in a new BYD Dolphin at R430,000.

They call an electrician to install a home charger. The electrician has never installed one. Doesn't know the connector types. Doesn't know how to integrate it with the existing solar system on the roof.

Now multiply that by 6526 the number of Plug in Hybrid and Battery Electric Vehicle sold in South Africa in just the first half of 2026. Just 445 public charging sites serve the entire country. A single public DC fast charger can cost up to R2 million to install and most qualified electricians have never been trained to do it.

The vehicles are here. The infrastructure isn't. And the people who should be building it, were never given the tools.
That changes now.

ChrisnelSA, in partnership with the Automotive Skills Development Council, presents the AIMGT EV Charging Infrastructure & Smart Energy Workshop the first accredited course designed to turn qualified electricians and solar PV installers into EV infrastructure specialists.

What you'll cover:
🔌 AC/DC charging fundamentals and charger types Type 1, Type 2, CCS, CHAdeMO, and GB/T
⚙️ OCPP 1.6/2.0 communication protocols the language charging networks run on
☀️ Solar PV integration with EV charging because in South Africa, smart energy isn't a luxury, it's the solution
📋 SA standards, NERSA regulations, and SANS 10142 compliance
🔧 Hands-on: Level 2 charger setup and OCPP demonstration
🌍 International best practice: what Asia, Europe and the rest of Africa are doing and how we can learn from it.

𝐖𝐡𝐨 𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐞𝐬? Qualified electricians with a valid Wireman's Licence, registered Solar PV installers (PV GreenCard or SAPVIA-recognised), National Diploma holders in Electrical Engineering and TVET-qualified electrical technicians (N3–N6 with completed trade test).

South Africa's EV charging market is projected to grow at 23.9% annually through 2031. The professionals who get certified now won't be looking for work, work will be looking for them.

The infrastructure gap is real. Be the person who closes it.

🔴 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐐𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐍𝐨𝐛𝐨𝐝𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐀𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠.
South Africa has 57% youth unemployment. The automotive has an average artisan age of over 50 and the vehicles on our roads are changing faster than anyone predicted.

13,193 New Energy Vehicles sold in just 6 months. 104% year-on-year growth.

So we have to ask:
Are the organisations meant to fight unemployment ready for the EV/HEV transition?

The Department of Labour. NYDA. SETAs. SA Youth. YES Programme. Municipalities. These are the bodies tasked with skilling and employing our young people.

But how many of their programmes include EV/HEV training? How many are preparing youth for the new job roles the automotive industry that cater to green mobility.

An Economist Impact survey found that 1 in 3 young urban consumers globally expect to own an electric vehicle within the next decade. South Africa has 7 OEMs. All have moved into New Energy Vehicles globally.

The transition is happening. The question is whether we're preparing our children for it or leaving them behind.

At ChrisnelSA, we are doing our part in training the next generation the real question it's whether you'll be part of it.

𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐍𝐞𝐱𝐭 𝐂𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐈𝐬 𝐃𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐇𝐲𝐛𝐫𝐢𝐝. 𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐲?
With 3,045 NEVs sold just in June 2026 alone and 1 in 17 new cars being electric. These aren't the cars of tomorrow they are already here.

So the question is:
⚡How many of our service technicians can safely isolate a 400V high voltage system?
⚡How many workshops have insulated tools rated to 1,000V?
⚡How many have the diagnostic equipment to read a hybrid powertrain fault code?
⚡How many have updated their safety procedures for high-voltage vehicle recovery?

South Africa's automotive aftermarket employs approximately 170,000 people. MIBCO data shows declining apprentice numbers across every major trade motor mechanics, diesel mechanics, auto electricians at the exact moment the technology is fundamentally changing.

The vehicles have arrived. Chery is opening a plant in Rosslyn right in the automotive epicenter of Tshwane. Toyota leads the hybrid market with a 67% share. GWM BYD, Geely, Omoda, and Jaecoo are entering the market with affordable hybrid and electric options.

But the training hasn't kept pace. The tools haven't been upgraded. The safety protocols haven't been written.

If you're a workshop owner, a dealership principal, a service manager, or a technician reading this: the shift isn't coming. It's here. The only question is whether your workshop will be ready to service these.
Are you prepared for the EV/HEV revolution?
