Congratulation to Serge Tomety from Togo who got his Ph.D. at UCT and the Nansen Tutu Center for Marine research thanks to an ACCESS bursary and NTC top-up. His thesis was on coastal climate change in the Benguela upwelling system and believe it or not, as it was not cold enough, the water of the West and South Coast of South Africa is getting colder due to climate change !!!!
[READ] Climate change is having a devastating impact on the African continent. A recent report coordinated by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) found that it is contributing to a surge in food insecurity, and threatening the health and safety of populations and socio-economic development. It has never been more critical to explore climate change - but from an African perspective. This concept was at the heart of the 34th Access HPW designed to introduce university students to the emerging discipline of Earth System Sciences.

Doing what we are BEST at...📚📗📖📃💡🎓Introducing rural learners to the emerging interdisciplinary field of Earth Systems Science. As we do so, we come to the inescapable revelation that Southern Africa turns out to be an exceptional region to be studying the Earth’s systems. We do this with some cool lectures, activities, field trips and a hole load of fun.

We are not just teachers, but role model scientists, who inspire more young black/ female South Africans to take up careers in science research, with a specific focus around the science of climate change; Earth Systems Science.
