Your Progress - Our Passion!

A child's brain is very vulnerable to stress, and there are very specific mechanisms in charge of tantrums in children. Rarely does a child "meltdown" on purpose or to provoke us-- it's a call for connection as tantrums are based on overwhelm and/or fear.

A child is designed to be WITH you when they feel fear, so staying with a child who is overwhelmed is the priority. This way they know:
(1) Their feelings are ok
(2) You can handle them
(3) They are not “bad” for feeling how they feel—they are human.

Each stage of childhood has its ups and downs and unique struggles; however, we think most parent’s struggles are grounded in not understanding how a child’s brain develops. We aren’t sent with the booklet on this from the hospital but it should be common knowledge for parents so they understand why children can be so impulsive, emotional and need so much movement, connection, and play to develop healthy brains.

While it can be very difficult during heated moments, try to remember the logical, upstairs brain or the prefrontal cortex is very poorly developed in children (we actually don’t have substantial utilization of that part of the brain until around five years of age, and it’s not done growing until you’re close to 30 years of age). So when a child or teen struggles with impulse control, emotion regulation, logical thinking, planning, hindsight/foresight, etc. this doesn’t mean anything is wrong with them, it often means the part of the hardware of the brain that is responsible for those functions is still under construction.
