🚨 MANDATORY SECURITY BRIEFING FROM LANTERN SCHOOL 🚨

Yesterday, civilians were celebrating "Administrative Professionals' Day". But we are breaking protocol to reveal the truth: our admin block isn't just an office. It is the Lantern School Secret Service Intelligence Agency! πŸ€«πŸ’Ό

Together, these elite operatives possess all the data, control all the money, and keep our entire compound secure from daily chaos.

Yesterday, we officially awarded them their Secret Service badges:

πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™‚οΈ The Front Desk Division (Angie, Engela, Anna & Lebogang): Our Elite Negotiation Experts. Frontline shields who can handle a frantic parent, a broken shoelace, and an angry delivery driver all at once without breaking a sweat.

πŸ“‰ The Finance Team (Rina & Liezel): Our Elite Budget Guards. Deep in the trenches hunting missing receipts and explaining that "emotional spending" is not an approved school expense.

🧠 The HR Department (Lizelle): Our Undercover Staff Psychologist. Holder of the ultimate poker face while handling staff secrets (and the occasional emotional support hamster crisis).

πŸ–¨οΈ The Copy Room Command (Oupa): Our Elite Emergency Responder. Performing daily, life-saving CPR on a copy machine that refuses to print unless you speak to it nicely.

Let’s be honest, the Principal might run the school on paper, but if this team doesn’t show up, the whole institution collapses into unfiled administrative ash!

Hulle is die ware enjinkamer van die skool. They know exactly whose aircon trips the school’s electricity (again) and exactly who needs a cup of coffee before losing their mind.

To our incredible office team: Thank you for keeping Lantern School standing.

Mission accomplished. πŸŽ–οΈ

Tip Tuesday: 8 Ways To Support Your Child With ADHDπŸ’›

Supporting a child with ADHD doesn’t always require big changes πŸ’› Often, it’s the small, consistent things we do every day that make home feel a little easier to navigate.

Creating predictable routines, breaking overwhelming tasks into smaller steps, preparing for transitions and recognising effort can all help children feel more supported, capable and understood🌱

And sometimes the most important thing we can give them is connection. Reminding them that they are so much more than the challenges they experience.

This Tip Tuesday, we’re also asking you to help us take that message beyond the home πŸŒŠπŸ’›

On 11 September, join our Sea of Yellow for National ADHD Awareness Day:

πŸ’› Wear yellow
πŸ’› Donate R10 ( https://payf.st/e0dy6 or link in bio)

βœ¨πŸ“šNational Book Week at Lantern! βœ¨πŸ“š

To celebrate National Book Week, we’re inviting our learners to take a journey through the pages of a book!

Our theme is: β€œEvery book opens a door to a new world.”

Each primary school learner will receive a special reading door to decorate. We want them to imagine: Where will a book take you?

They can decorate their door with:
πŸ“– Their favourite book characters
🌍 Places they have visited through stories
πŸ’‘ Things they would like to learn about

Please help your child bring their imagination to life at home. They can draw, colour, cut, stick and create. There is no right or wrong way to do it!

We will be celebrating and showcasing their wonderful creations at school on Friday, 4 September (latest Monday, 7 September) .

I’ll post a short video in the comments showing how to set up the door so that the decorated page opens to reveal their own book world.

We can’t wait to see where our Little Lantern readers travel!

Yours in reading

Small changes can make a BIG difference Let's start communicating better πŸ’›πŸ’›

Small changes can make a BIG difference

Let's start communicating better

πŸ’›πŸ’›

πŸ’› COMMUNICATION CHEAT SHEET: Small changes can make a BIG difference πŸ’¬

When a child is struggling to listen, follow instructions or regulate big emotions, our first instinct can sometimes be to repeat ourselves, add more instructions or correct the behaviour immediately.

But how we communicate can make all the difference. πŸ§ πŸ’›

Try these simple shifts:

πŸ›‘ Before you speak, STOP.
Ask yourself: Do I have their attention? Am I calm? Is my instruction clear? Am I asking too much at once?

πŸ‘‚ Get their attention first.
Say their name, move closer, make eye contact where appropriate, and wait until you know they are listening before giving the instruction.

πŸ“‹ Keep instructions simple.
Instead of: β€œGo upstairs, brush your teeth, put your pyjamas on and get your school bag ready.”
Try: β€œPlease go and brush your teeth.” One step at a time.

πŸ‘ Tell them what TO do, not only what NOT to do.
Instead of β€œStop running!” try β€œPlease walk next to me.” Clear expectations are easier to follow.

❀️ Validate the feeling while holding the boundary.
β€œI can see you’re angry. It’s okay to feel angry, but it’s not okay to hit. Let’s find another way.”

πŸ’¬ Use β€œI” messages instead of blame.
β€œI feel frustrated when toys are left on the floor because someone could trip over them. I need you to put them away.”

↔️ Offer limited choices.
β€œWould you like to brush your teeth before or after putting on your pyjamas?” Two acceptable options can give a child a sense of control without removing the boundary.

🀝 And after conflict, reconnect.
Arguments happen. Repair matters. Connection before correction.

And this is exactly what Sea of Yellow is about: creating greater understanding of ADHD so that children are met with support, inclusion and strategies that help them thrive. πŸŒŠπŸ’›
