Ms Khethiwe Nxumalo from Higher Health cautioned students against relying on โgirlfriend allowancesโ or financial support from fellow students or older partners, warning that such arrangements may be used as a means of control and could ultimately interfere with their studies.
She encouraged students to be cautious of things that come too easily or are offered for free, and to prioritise their education and wellbeing.
She also addressed cyberbullying and body shaming, encouraging students to stand up for themselves, speak out and report incidents to the Student Support Services Unit where necessary.

Richtek Campus was buzzing yesterday as students and staff came together for an impactful Gender Based Violence March and Awareness Programme, united in their commitment to creating a safer and more supportive campus community.
Speakers unpacked the cycle of abuse, explaining how abusive relationships can move through different stages, including the honeymoon phase, tension building, abusive behaviour and reconciliation. Students were encouraged to recognise these patterns and understand that abuse should never be normalised or tolerated.
The message was clear: speak out, seek help and do not bottle up your struggles. Students were encouraged to prioritise themselves, know their worth, set healthy boundaries and understand that everyone has the right to be treated with fairness, dignity and respect in a relationship.
Sinethemba Phakathi, a Social Worker from Lifeline Zululand, encouraged students to take charge of their lives and develop positive ways of managing conflict and anger. She urged them to have honest conversations with themselves, identify people they can confide in and build supportive networks where they can uplift and encourage one another.
The awareness served as an important reminder that breaking the cycle of GBV starts with speaking up, seeking support and choosing healthy relationships.
One campus, one voice, one stand against GBV!

Bambanani Campus took a stand against GBV and substance abuse by hosting a powerful GBV and Substance Abuse Awareness Programme under the theme:
โOne Campus, One Voice, One Stand Against GBV and Substance Abuse.โ
The programme was held in collaboration with KZNERA and brought together a range of stakeholders who equipped students with valuable knowledge and practical guidance.
KZNERA addressed responsible drinking and responsible gambling, while Higher Health focused on mental health. Old Mutual shared insights on money matters and responsible spending, with SAPS addressing crime prevention.
Correctional Services brought an ex-inmate to share his personal experiences of incarceration and the lasting impact it has had on his life, offering students a powerful reminder of the consequences of crime and substance abuse.
The programme also featured an engaging dialogue led by KZNERA, DSD, Lifeline, SORD and SANCA, tackling important issues surrounding GBV and substance abuse.
