John Ross College, is an English Medium High School in Richards Bay, KZN, South Africa. In 1975, the port of Richards Bay was officially opened.

Today, we commemorate Youth Day and pay tribute to the brave young people of 16 June 1976 whose courage and determination helped shape the future of South Africa.

At John Ross College, we honour their legacy by encouraging our learners to pursue excellence, embrace opportunity, and use their voices to make a positive difference in the world around them.

As we reflect on the sacrifices of the past, we are reminded that the youth remain a powerful force for change, innovation, and hope.

"The future belongs to those who prepare for it today."

Wishing all our learners, staff, parents, and the wider JRC community a meaningful Youth Day.

The Grade 9 learners visited the University of Zululand Drama Department to watch the staging of the South African classics Sophiatown and Woza Albert, which are part of the Grade 9 Term 2 Creative Arts syllabus.

We wanted our learners to experience these plays live, presented by professional actors, in order to gain an in-depth understanding of South African theatre. Artists are society’s memory bank because they help us remember where we come from as a people. Sophiatown documents the Group Areas Act, which led to the separation of living spaces according to race and ethnic group, while Woza Albert highlights the restrictions that the pass laws inflicted on Black communities.

It is important for young people to watch such plays in order to have a nuanced understanding of the socio-political landscape of our country.

The boys of John Ross College were privileged to welcome Rob Bentele, winner of Survivor South Africa 2019, to address our learners.

Rob shared his personal journey, speaking openly about overcoming bullying, the importance of self-improvement, and why boys should support and uplift one another rather than tear each other down. His message encouraged our boys to lead with resilience, integrity, and respect.

Thank you, Rob, for investing in the young men of JRC and for sharing such valuable life lessons. Your words left a meaningful and lasting impact.
