Aftercare Homework Supervision vs Private Tutoring
It is quite interesting that there are parents in our communities who have the unrealistic expectation that Aftercare Homework Supervision can be equated to Private Tutoring and that it is the responsibility of their Aftercare Service to ensure that their child passes the subjects their child is struggling with.
Aside from the exponentially higher hourly fees of a Professional Private Tutor who Specialiases in Specific Subjects, a good private tutor works hand in hand with the child's teacher and their parents to address the problems the child experiences in specific subjects, and are able to do a proper assessment of the exact components of the subject(s) that your child is struggling with.
We all need to understand and accept that even a really good private tutor cannot 100% guarantee that your child will suddenly pass but they will after some time be able to give you a good indication of whether your child is making progress or not or whether your child may need a different form of intervention.
What a good Aftercare Service does is ensure that your child completes their homework and/or that they spend a part of their afternoon studying in a safe and conducive environment.
It is up to you as a parent and through consultation with your child's teachers to decide whether your child needs Private Tutoring and whether you are willing and able to make the substantial Financial Sacrifice, but please understand that Homework Supervision at an Aftercare Service should not be confused with private tutoring.
Many children who get Private Tutoring are in fact at an Aftercare and they go to their Private Tutoring afterwards at least once a week.
Private Tutoring on average can often cost a few hundred rands per hour or per session and for most kids it can sometimes take a few months before they show any remarkable improvement in their results.
At the end of the day neither their school teacher, their private tutor nor their aftercare service sits down to write your child's exam for them and thus none of us can guarantee that your child will pass.
We at , and hopefully most of the other Aftercare Services want your child to do well in school, but we can only go as far as making sure that they do their homework and spend time studying while they are in our care.
If your child needs more than that, your first port of call is to speak to their school teachers and they can help you assess what your child needs in terms of Private Tutoring or perhaps the teacher might only decide to give them extra homework exercises that helps them get the basics right, which is a little bit of extra work for the teacher as well, and most teachers will gladly spend that extra few minutes if it will help your child pass, but they will need buy-in and effort from you as the parent.
We as an Aftercare Service will of course gladly ensure that they get to do the extra work if you keep us in the loop but you ought to also check and see how they are doing when you all get home.
