You Don't Need a Degree to Create Value
A degree can open doors. But it isn't the only key on the key ring.
Someone who can fix a leaking tap, repair a phone, cut hair, cook a good meal, install Wi-Fi, design a flyer, look after children or repair a car is creating value.
And people pay for value.
In South Africa, we sometimes think, “I need a qualification before I can earn.” But sometimes the better question is: “What problem can I solve?”
You don't need a university building to learn a useful skill. You can learn from experienced people, online courses, apprenticeships, practice and—occasionally—the school of “Oops, I broke it. Now I need to learn how to fix it.”
Lesson: Don't measure your potential only by certificates. Measure it by the problems you can solve and the value you can create. There are people all around you that need help with many different things or problems. The secret to life is knowing that the more people you help the more they will help you.

Don't Let Other People's Expectations Define You
In South Africa, young people can face enormous pressure.
“Go to university.”
“Get a government job.”
“Become a doctor.”
“Become an engineer.”
“Get a stable job.”
“Make your family proud.”
Good advice can come from people who genuinely care about you.
But your life is still yours.
Maybe you are a natural entrepreneur.
Maybe you're a talented electrician.
Maybe you want to become a mechanic.
Maybe you're interested in technology.
Maybe you want to build a farming business.
Maybe you want to become a designer, teacher, builder, technician or content creator.
Maybe you don't know yet.
That's okay.
The important thing is to discover your strengths, understand the opportunities around you and deliberately develop the capabilities needed for the path you choose.
Don't choose your entire future simply because someone else chose it for you.
Ask yourself:
What am I interested in?
What am I good at?
What am I willing to learn?
What problems would I like to solve?
What kind of person do I want to become?
Your life should not be a copy of someone else's expectations.
Discover your direction. Develop yourself. Build your future.
It doesn’t matter if you start doing something you think you want to do and spend two years learning those skills. Then you decide its not for you. That’s the learning curve and even if you feel you wasted two years you haven’t because what you learned will benefit you in the future.

Many young people believe they need money before they can create an income.
Sometimes money is necessary.
But money isn't the only asset you can build.
Your ability to learn is an asset.
Your ability to communicate is an asset.
Your technical skills are an asset.
Your ability to solve problems is an asset.
Your reputation is an asset.
Your relationships are an assets.
Your reliability is an asset.
Your experience is an asset.
And your ability to create value for other people is one of the most important assets you can develop.
Imagine two young South Africans.
One has R5,000 but no useful skill.
The other has almost no money but knows how to repair appliances, communicate with customers and deliver reliable service.
Who has something that can potentially generate income?
The answer isn't simply “the person with money.”
Capital can help you build a business, but that will be lost if you have no capabilities.
Do not start a business because you believe the business will bring in money – a business cannot bring in money it is you that brings in the money for the business.
Once you have spent the money the only way to get it back is through capability.
But capability can help you create capital.
So don't wait until you have money before you start developing yourself.
Build your knowledge.
Build your skills.
Build your character.
Build your relationships.
Build your value.

Nobody Is Coming—So Start Building
There is a powerful moment in life when you realize that waiting doesn't create opportunities.
You can wait for government.
Wait for the perfect job.
Wait for an employer to discover you.
Wait for someone to give you money.
Wait for your circumstances to change.
Or you can start building.
Start learning.
Start meeting people.
Start solving small problems.
Start offering a service.
Start gaining experience.
Start building a reputation.
Start creating something useful.
This doesn't mean government has no role to play, or that society shouldn't address unemployment, poverty and inequality.
It means you shouldn't put your entire future on hold while waiting for somebody else to fix everything.
If you are unemployed, ask:
“What can I learn that makes me more employable?”
If you have a skill, ask:
“Whose problem can I solve?”
If you have no money, ask:
“What can I start with the resources I already have?”
You don't need permission to begin developing yourself.
Start where you are. Build what you can. Improve as you go.
The truth is its up to you, even if you were given a job, it would be up to you to grow in that position or you won’t be there very long.

Your Past Is Not Your Business Plan
Maybe you failed Grade 12.
Maybe you couldn't afford university.
Maybe you've been unemployed for years.
Maybe your first business failed.
Maybe someone told you that you would never amount to anything.
Maybe you made decisions you regret.
Those things are part of your history.
But your history should not automatically become your future plan.
A young South African who didn't have the opportunity to attend university can still develop valuable skills.
Someone who failed at business can learn about customers, pricing and cash flow.
Someone who has been unemployed can use the time to develop practical abilities and build relationships.
A young black South African living during the apartheid era went to and all white university and become a lawyer and later became the president of South Africa – what is your excuse.
Your past can teach you.
It can make you wiser.
It can show you what doesn't work.
But don't let it become a prison.
A business plan looks forward.
So should you.
Ask yourself:
What do I know today that I didn't know five years ago?
What can I learn next?
What problem could I learn to solve?
Your past is your history.
It doesn't have to be your business plan.

Victim or Builder?
Life can give you reasons to ask:
“Why me?”
Why was I born into poverty?
Why can't I find a job?
Why did my parents struggle?
Why didn't I have the same opportunities as someone else?
Those are legitimate questions.
But eventually another question becomes more useful:
“What can I do about it?”
That is the mindset of a builder.
A builder doesn't deny the problem. A builder looks at the problem and asks what can be done.
If there are no jobs, what skills are businesses looking for?
If people have limited income, what affordable problems can I solve?
If I don't have experience, where can I gain it?
If I don't have money to start a business, what service can I provide using the skills I already have?
South Africa needs people who can identify problems and create solutions.
You don't have to have all the answers.
Start by changing the question.
From “Why me?” to “What can I do?”
That is where action begins.
You need to know that every business was started with just one customer.

You cannot control the unemployment rate.
You cannot control electricity prices.
You cannot control the economy.
You cannot control whether a company gives you an interview.
But there are many things you can control.
You can control how seriously you take your learning.
You can control whether you develop useful skills.
You can control how you treat people.
You can control whether you keep your promises.
You can control how you use your time.
You can control who you learn from.
You can control whether you keep trying after rejection.
And you can control the choices you make today.
Don't waste all your energy fighting things you cannot control.
Put more energy into the things you can influence.
One hour spent learning a valuable skill is an investment.
One useful relationship can create an opportunity.
One small action can become the beginning of something much bigger.
If you are looking for a job, then you have time to learn new skills

Where you were born, the school you attended, your family's income, whether your parents had opportunities, or whether you grew up in a township, rural area or suburb can influence where you start.
But your starting point is not your destination.
South Africa has millions of young people facing unemployment, financial pressure and limited opportunities. Those challenges are real. But there is another reality: you can develop yourself.
You can learn a skill.
You can improve your communication.
You can build relationships.
You can learn how money and business work.
You can solve problems for other people.
You can start small.
You may not control the circumstances you inherited, but you can begin building the capabilities you need for the future you want.
Don't spend your entire life asking, “Why was I given this starting point?”
Start asking:
“What can I build from here?”
Your circumstances may explain where you begin.
They don't have to define where you finish.
If you take the time to do some research on people that started with nothing and became very wealthy, you will find thousands and you will find them in every nation.

50. How One Person's Success Can Uplift an Entire Family

Sometimes you are not working only for yourself.
Your success can change the direction of an entire family.
PROBLEM
When one person increases their income, develops valuable skills or builds a successful business, the benefits can reach far beyond that individual.
Children may receive better opportunities.
Parents may receive support.
Siblings may learn new skills.
A family can move from surviving to planning. It only takes one person in your family to want change and you will find the rest of your family want you to succeed, this is in the nature of human beings. Be that person for your family, break the mold and change the direction of your families life.
LESSON
Success becomes powerful when it is shared.
“When you improve yourself, you don't just change your future. You increase the possibilities available to the people who come after you.”
