10/70/20 model of learning is very effective in the workplace.
Ever since companies have been paying skills levies, we have realized the importance of upskilling our staff. But most of that training has been in the classroom.
The big question is, how effective has this classroom training been? Do employees implement what they learn in the classroom?
The 10/70/20 principle holds that only 10% of learning should take place in the classroom; the rest should take place in the workplace, with the support of their managers, whose role is the employees' mentor.
This approach to training is quite foreign to most of us and will require a mindset change from managers and employees, but if we can prove the success of this way of learning, we will create a learning culture within our organizations. We will then make our employees less dependent on our facilitation of learning and more dependent on themselves and their managers.
The focus will also change in our training departments from training/facilitating to developing work based materials and exercises and supporting managers in their mentoring role, as well as employees in their self studies. In effect, we will turn our workplaces into universities and even better than our universities, because of the work experience that is so valuable.
If you are not already doing this, I challenge you, if you are in the L&D department of your organization to take one program you are delivering and try the 10/70/20 approach.
But to be successful, you need to begin by getting buy-in from your top management first.
Good luck and if you feel so inclined, let me now how it goes.
Learning to delay self-gratification or control our impulses is not really an option, if we want to survive in this world.
Pistorius’ whole life and career has been hanging in the balance, as a result of one emotional moment; a life is taken prematurely and a whole family is affected.
“There is perhaps no psychological skill more fundamental than resisting impulse. It is the root of all emotional self-control, since all emotions, by their very nature, lead to one or other impulse to act." Daniel Goleman.
Your success depends on your emotional intelligence. And the good news is you are able to improve it through not only life experience, but through training and education.

New year, New ME?
With the New Year come thoughts and considerations of what we would like to achieve. For 2015, what about considering a new ME? I'm talking about the internal ME, which ultimately reflects my external ME. How others see ME, are impacted by ME and feel about ME is ultimately determined by ME.
As I reflected on 2014 - what I had achieved and began writing a list of what I wanted to achieve in 2015, I decided to place at the top of my list, characteristics and traits I wanted to see in ME in 2015. Just some of the things I listed were : be positive & optimistic, in spite of the situation; be kind and respectful; be cheerful and laugh more; be fun to be around; be patient and more considerate of others; take less offense..... In other words, my goal is to purposefully increase my Emotional Intelligence - my ability to relate to others and positively impact others.
Did you know, 90% of people are hired for their skills, qualifications and experience; 80% of people get fired, due to low Emotional Intelligence; poor attitude and inability to relate appropriately to their co-workers.
You may want to get feedback from people closest to you, if you are unsure of your observable behaviour and the impact you have on others. Also a good idea is to get yourself onto an Emotional Intelligence programme. The good news is, we can change attitudes and observable behaviour and improve our EQ.
What's on your list to create a new ME for 2015?
