A Fond Farewell to Our Headmaster

At the end of Term 3, our staff came together for a very special evening to bid a fond farewell to our Headmaster, Mr Anaxagoras, as he retires after nine wonderful years of dedicated service to Queenstown Girls’ High School.

We celebrated Mr A and the remarkable journey we have shared with him over the past nine years with a beautiful Greek-themed dinner, wonderfully catered by Johan Rheeders from Roche House.

It was an evening filled with laughter, warm memories, and heartfelt farewell messages from special guests, along with beautiful performances by our choir and isiXhosa Ensemble. A particularly meaningful moment was the presentation of a special gift painted by Mrs Maclean — a lasting reminder of a very special chapter in the history of our school.

Mr A, thank you for nine years of leadership, commitment and heart. Thank you for the memories, the guidance, the laughter and for the part you have played in the life and story of GHS.

As you close this chapter and begin a new one, we wish you every happiness in your retirement. May the years ahead bring you time to enjoy the things you love, new adventures and many wonderful moments with those closest to you.

You leave with our gratitude, our warmest wishes and a very special place in the GHS story.

Today, as we gathered for Mr Anaxagoras’ final assembly at Queenstown Girls’ High School, Ayola Bobie shared a beautiful tribute on behalf of our learners — reflecting not only on the legacy of our school, but on the people who help shape each chapter of its story.

151 years behind us.
A lifetime of excellence ahead of us.

For 151 years, Queenstown Girls’ High School has stood proudly amongst the crested hills of our beautiful town — not simply as a school, but as a place where girls become women of character, courage and purpose.

A place where friendships become sisterhood.
Where challenges become opportunities.
And where ordinary girls discover that they are capable of extraordinary things.

Our school has never been built by bricks alone. It has been built by every girl who chose kindness over cruelty, integrity over popularity, hard work over excuses, and excellence over mediocrity.

That is what makes a GHS girl.

As we look towards the next chapter of our school and Vision ’27, we also acknowledge someone who has played an important part in shaping the chapter we are living in today.

To our Principal, Mr Anaxagoras, as you prepare to retire, we simply want to say thank you.

Thank you for your leadership, your dedication and the countless hours you have given to Queenstown Girls’ High School.

We hope you leave knowing that your contribution does not retire with you. It remains in the school, in its people, and in the lives of the girls who have passed through these gates during your time as Principal.

Our responsibility is to honour those who came before us while continuing to strengthen the legacy we inherit.

May we preserve what makes Queenstown Girls’ High extraordinary.
May we lead with purpose.
May we honour those who came before us.
And may we always remain —

A particularly special moment followed when our Head Girl, Mihlali Kali, presented Mr Anaxagoras with his portrait. In keeping with a treasured tradition at Queenstown Girls’ High School, the portrait was then hung at the school — taking its place alongside those of the leaders who have served GHS before him.

It was a fitting reminder that although Mr Anaxagoras’ time as Principal is coming to an end, his place in the history of Queenstown Girls’ High School will remain.
