Meet the Facilitators: Prof Amira Osman

Prof Amira Osman is an architect, researcher, academic, public speaker, and author whose prolific work demonstrates her dedication to promoting change in conversations and practice around architecture, space and cities.

A professor of architecture at the Tshwane University of Technology, Prof Osman is also a registered professional architect, a joint coordinator for the international CIB W104 Open Building Implementation network and a past president of the South African Institute of Architects (SAIA). She is the convenor of the conference series: A City is [Not] a Tree: the Urban Ecologies of Divided Cities and the editor of The Built Environment in Emerging Economies (BEinEE) Book Series.

Amira has extensive experience curating international events, coordinating complex programmes and exhibitions in terms of design, conceptualising content and managing diverse teams.

The Executive Course on Housing Policy was developed under her guidance as the holder of the prestigious SARChI: DST/NRF/SACN Research Chair in Spatial Transformation (Positive Change in the Built Environment).

Meet the Facilitators: Prof Emmanuel Nkambule

Prof Emmanuel Nkambule is an architect and Associate Professor at the Graduate School of Architecture, University of Johannesburg. His practice, research, and teaching concentrate on the role of architecture in tackling socio-economic and socio-spatial issues in Africa.

His work is disseminated in the form of architectural projects, publications, public lecture series, and exhibitions. He has served as a panelist for architectural awards, an external reviewer at various architectural institutions, a curator, and a design-thinker contributing across multiple platforms.

Meet the Facilitators: Prof Luxien Ariyan

Committed to marrying theory and practical application, Dr Luxien Ariyan has 30 years of experience in land and housing in South Africa. He has an abiding interest in and passion for social justice issues and brings to his teaching a perfect blend of incisive theoretical and practical insights on housing policy.

Luxien’s experience includes: establishing the Office of Disclosure, serving as the chief government coordinator for the Financial Sector Charter housing component and being the Managing Director of the Africa Resource Centre for Housing (ARCH). He has also served on the drafting teams for the Finance-Linked Individual Subsidy Programme, Inclusionary Housing, Breaking New Ground, Home Loan and Mortgage Disclosure Act, Community Reinvestment Bill, and Social Housing Act.

Dr Ariyan has presented and published multiple papers on a variety of themes at land and housing conferences and workshops worldwide. He currently teaches and consults on land restitution; community development & urban planning; housing policy & provisioning; and, sports & workplace transformation. He is also at the forefront of unearthing and trialling alternative/ innovative house building systems that are easy and fast to build, efficient and affordable.

His in-depth, wide-ranging governmental experience in the land and housing sectors in general and policy-drafting in particular, coupled with his long-standing involvement in academia on built environment pursuits, makes Dr Luxien Ariyan the ideal candidate to lead the Executive Course in Housing Policy.

We’re delighted to welcome all participants to the 2nd workshop of the Bicycle Master Plan for Zanzibar and Stone Town – a project initiated by the DST/NRF/SACN SARChI Chair in with the Tshwane University of Technology.

The Bicycle Master Plan is a participatory urban mobility project that focuses on bicycle infrastructure.

The project uses temporary, tactical interventions based on existing local travel practices to explore long-term solutions for sustainable transport in Zanzibar.

The workshop on Thursday is the second in a series of participatory workshops aimed to culminate in the co-creation of a master plan that outlines non-motorized infrastructure plans for Zanzibar in general, and Stone Town, in particular.
