🧗‍♂️ PBHS Climbers Make Their Mark at Nationals!

We are delighted to celebrate three of our talented climbers who represented Gauteng at the Climbing Nationals held in Johannesburg and Pretoria over the holiday.

Johan Vorster, Philip Anspach and Pieter Vorster all competed in both the Lead and Boulder categories, putting in impressive performances against the country’s top young climbers.

🏅 Johan Vorster – 4th in both Boulder and Lead | Youth B
🏅 Philip Anspach – 4th in both Boulder and Lead | Junior
🥉 Pieter Vorster – 5th in Boulder and 3rd in Lead, earning a well-deserved podium finish at a national competition.

An outstanding achievement by all three boys, and an exciting indication of what lies ahead. All three are eligible to compete in various international competitions next year.

Well done, gentlemen! We are incredibly proud of you and wish you every success on the next climb. 🇿🇦🧗‍♂️

Aubrey Bürer, Class of 1956 – Town House

🏊‍♂️ 125 Years of Excellence | The Boys This Pool Made

In September 1960, in Rome, a Pretoria Boys High Old Boy stood on the blocks in an Olympic final.

Aubrey Bürer swam 56.3 seconds for the 100m freestyle that night and finished seventh in the world.

He swam for South Africa at the 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Cardiff. It was the last Commonwealth Games South Africa would contest before its withdrawal in 1961. In Rome he swam three events and placed in all of them. Seventh over 100m. Ninth over 1500m. Eleventh over 400m. Very few swimmers have ever carried that range.

He was the Swimming Captain for PBHS in 1956.

He went on to swim for the Southern Methodist University Mustangs in Dallas.

𝘼𝙣𝙙 𝙝𝙚 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙣𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙤 𝙨𝙬𝙞𝙢 𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚.

In the pool this community built by hand in 1934, with picks and shovels, in the worst years of the Depression. The pool paid for by concerts and dances and fêtes, with the running total chalked up on a giant thermometer in the School Hall.

That is what a school pool is. Not a facility. The place a boy finds out what he might be.

Ours now needs R3 million. R1,2 million to resurface it, and R1,8 million for the infrastructure and reticulation underneath. Proceeds from the auction at the Gentlemen's Evening on Friday 23 October go towards it.

What a magnificent three evenings of music! 🎶

The Four Schools Concerts were nothing short of spectacular - and with every performance sold out, the atmosphere in the auditorium was truly unforgettable.

From the stirring sounds of “Great Heart” by Johnny Clegg and the infectious energy of “Special Star” by Mango Groove, to the beauty of the traditional song “Emakhayeni”, the programme celebrated the incredible diversity and talent of our young performers.

One of the most moving moments came with “Amazing Grace”, accompanied by the beautiful sound of bagpipes played by James Pilcher - a performance that left the audience with goosebumps.

Three evenings, four schools, hundreds of performers and an extraordinary celebration of music.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who performed, conducted, supported, sponsored and, most importantly, came along to share in these very special evenings.

🎶 A new chapter for the world class Music Department at Boys High!

On 17 September, we welcomed members of the Class of 1985 for the unveiling of our newly upgraded Recording Studio.

As part of their 40-year reunion celebrations, the Class of 1985 chose to give back to PBHS by supporting this exciting project, spearheaded by Old Boy Mr Fortunato Mazzone of Forti’s Restaurants.

The upgraded studio will give our boys valuable opportunities to develop music technology and recording skills, while supporting the recording of our many talented ensembles and soloists.

The PBHS Guitar Quartet, under the direction of Mr Gersteling, provided the perfect soundtrack to the occasion - with their performance recorded in the new studio. 🎸

A heartfelt thank you to Mr Mazzone and the Class of 1985 for investing in the future of Music at Boys High and continuing the proud tradition of giving back.

ATHLETICS 🇭🇺

This weekend our athletes competed at Noord vs Suid in Paarl, and we are proud of their third place out of the boys’ teams.

Our athletes broke three school records and equalled one of them. They also broke four meet records, won best track athlete, and they were awarded six gold, six silver and five bronze medals.
