When Sport Becomes Something Bigger ❤️🏑

An article in this morning’s 'Die Papier' newspaper captured something truly special about the recent PBHS vs Affies fixtures last weekend.

Written by an anonymous father who witnessed a series of moving moments after a hockey match, the article shines a light on something that goes far beyond the final score: respect, sportsmanship and the character of our young men from both schools.

Rivalry makes sport exciting. Competition brings out the best in us. But what matters most is how we treat one another when the whistle blows.

The friendship, respect and camaraderie between the boys from these two great Pretoria schools is a wonderful reminder that sport has the power to teach lessons that extend far beyond the playing field.

To the boys of both schools you made us proud. Not simply because you competed, but because you showed what it means to compete with courage, dignity and respect. Our relationship with Affies remains an important one even after a 100 years of passionate and compassionate rivalry.

This is what school sport should be about. ❤️

𝗚𝗮𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗵 𝗚𝗶𝗹𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗮 𝗕𝗼𝘆𝘀 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵.

An Old Boy, former Solomon House boy and member of the Candies in ’97 and ’98, Gareth returns with more than 20 years of coaching and high-performance experience across South Africa, Botswana and the Netherlands.

His career has included roles as Technical Director of Rugby Nederland, Head Coach of the Netherlands Men’s National Team, Head Coach of the Netherlands Women’s National XV and Head Coach of the Netherlands Under-20 Men’s National Team.

Under his leadership, the Dutch men’s national programme climbed from 45th to 26th in the World Rugby rankings, while the Netherlands U20s won the 2023 Rugby Europe Under-20 Championship.

At the heart of Gareth’s work is a simple belief: The environment shapes the individual.

His approach places high performance, education, wellbeing, relationships and personal development at the centre of building better players and better people.

Now he returns home to Pretoria Boys High, taking over the baton from PBHS legend Paul “The Lion from Lebanon” Anthony.

Last night’s Splash Choir Concert was a truly special evening. 🎶🇭🇺

Five different schools came together for this exceptional celebration of choral music, making the evening even more memorable.

Congratulations to our Choir and Music Department on a wonderful performance. A special mention to Mr Van der Westhuizen, who composed three of the pieces performed by the choir.

Thank you to everyone involved in putting together such a special evening and for continuing to enrich the musical life of Boys High.

Boys High History

In the midst of the Great Depression, Pretoria Boys High embarked on one of the most ambitious projects in its history: building the School's first swimming pool.

Without government funding, boys, staff, parents and supporters rallied together through concerts, dances, fêtes and markets. Forms even competed to raise funds, tracking their progress on giant thermometers displayed in the School Hall. A ‘clock’ indicated the total collected by all efforts.

By the end of 1934, more than £1 100 had been raised towards making the dream a reality.

The pool that generations of Boys High boys have enjoyed began with a community united by a shared vision and a determination to build for the future.

Our Form V Life Sciences pupils recently visited Maropeng and the Sterkfontein Caves, an excursion that brought their final topic, human evolution, vividly to life. 🦴

Walking through the very site where some of the world’s most significant hominin fossils were discovered gave the boys a real appreciation for South Africa’s place in the story of human origins. From the exhibits at Maropeng to descending into the caves themselves, it was a fantastic opportunity to consolidate classroom learning with first-hand experience. 🇭🇺
