Marutha Advocates for Archival Justice at National Archives Week
The Department of Information Science at the University of South Africa (UNISA) proudly congratulates Prof Ngaoko Marutha for delivering a keynote address during the National Archives Week Celebration held at the University of Limpopo on 15 May 2026. Prof Marutha, a Full Professor, NRF C2-rated researcher and specialist in Archives and Records Management within the Department, delivered a thought-provoking presentation titled βDigital Transformation Towards Archival Justice.β
In his keynote address, Prof Marutha highlighted the importance of archival justice in ensuring fairness, inclusivity and equity within archives and records management. He emphasized that archival justice seeks to ensure that all voices, particularly those that were historically marginalized or silenced, are properly documented, preserved and made accessible to society. His presentation underscored the critical role of archives in safeguarding collective memory, promoting accountability and supporting social justice within communities.
Prof Marutha further argued that achieving archival justice is impossible under the current outdated and manual methods of managing archives and records. He noted that the rapid growth of records creation, increased demand for information access and the expansion of digital content continue to place enormous pressure on archivists and records managers worldwide. As a result, he called for a transition from traditional manual systems to modern electronic and digitally transformed archival environments.
His insightful presentation sparked meaningful discussions on digital transformation and the future of archives across Africa and beyond, reaffirming the Department of Information Scienceβs growing contribution to innovation and thought leadership in the archives and records management profession.
