While exploring Walter Sisulu Square in Kliptown today, I learned that 3000 South Africans of all races known as the Congress of the People gathered here on the 26th of June in 1955 to adopt The Freedom Charter, parts of which form the basis of our constitution today.
50000 volunteers went into townships and the countryside to gather ‘freedom demands’ enabling all South Africans to have a voice, and these were collated and written into the charter.
